# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Ockbrook: Why It Happens

Stop reading for a moment if the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, carried out right where your vehicle sits in Ockbrook, is usually what it takes if found before your motor runs.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to your motor — but many modern diesels seen around Ockbrook and Spondon carry another fluid too.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, and there spraying cleans the gas.

Each tank has its own filler.

Other motors keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty more place the two side by side under one flap.

Diesel goes in on every forecourt visit, again and again.

Rarely filled, AdBlue normally goes in from a bottle, poured by someone who has to stop and think what filler it needs.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## Ockbrook: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Haste follows from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a drive off New Street, or on the way home in the car park outside Queens Head.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — but a rental car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That's the second thing: a strange car.

A spouted bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, once begun, keeps on.

Moravian Settlement or the heart of Ockbrook: it is the same few seconds either way.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in The Flourish or a forecourt in Ockbrook, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Check the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally aren't.

- Plenty of vehicles fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Lift the filler flap and check for a label — plenty of vehicles mark which goes in which inlet just there.

- The handbook says which it lives if the filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The previous driver will know. Check as you pick up a hire car or company car — from Spondon's car park, say — not when the warning comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Derbyshire that is.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Flood Street.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft. It works.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the car, shut the cap and check again that the diesel cap was never opened off.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Ockbrook already?

Don't start your motor: that is how the short order of things starts.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels as soon as the ignition goes on — and so leave it off.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

On a forecourt — Shell, Texaco or any other — the attendants will normally help push your car away, when you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway in Ockbrook.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your engine has already run.

On the M1, under 5 miles from Ockbrook, that means the next exit.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Ockbrook is smaller work than a trip of under 5 miles towards Derby, so say.

## Ockbrook: what happens when our engineers arrive

Our technicians come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Redhill Primary School, close to The Parish Hall or on your own driveway.

Those answers decide the work and the price, and so our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it's run.

On the call itself, you are told the price — before dispatch.

Then the tank is emptied and your system cleaned thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that matters more here than with petrol.

After the filter has been flushed — or replaced, if needed — clean diesel is added, and finally your car is tested.

After that our engineers start it and confirm it runs properly before we leave.

With pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the engine hasn't run need about half an hour after our technicians are there.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents your insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
