# Old Netley: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Keep your engine and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Caught before the engine runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Old Netley.

The remainder of this page explains why it takes place and how to make sure it does not — handy if you are reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Diesel feeds the motor — but many current diesels driven about Old Netley and Butlocks Heath hold a second fluid too.

The exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the fumes to fresh it, from a separate tank.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, the diesel side is topped up constantly.

The AdBlue side is filled far less commonly, usually from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake grows in that gap between the two.

## Old Netley: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens

Carelessness seldom explains it. Instead is three things coming up together.

Haste follows from the warning. The car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a drive off Elmslie Gardens, or on the way home in the car park at The Plough.

Then the vehicle is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the spout goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in just as readily, and after the pour starts, nothing stops it.

Lowford or the middle of Old Netley: it is the same few seconds in both.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Look at these first, on a forecourt in Old Netley or a drive over in Hightown. A few seconds, no more.

- Read the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue ones are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally aren't.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Bursledon.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

Anywhere around Hampshire the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Pull in somewhere level, motor off, with time in hand — not rushing on the side of Manor Close.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It seems daft. It does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Stage five is out.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Old Netley already?

Short list, then. First: the engine stays off.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — and so leave it off.

Filling up with diesel will not thin it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the base of your tank, just where fuel is taken from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it's the Tesco or the BP, ask the staff to help roll the vehicle clear of the petrol pump.

Your own driveway around Old Netley is the place it should stay.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Come off the M27 — under a mile out of Old Netley — at the first junction.

Distance counts — a short hop across Old Netley makes a smaller job than heading under 5 miles to Southampton — so tell us about how far it went.

## What occurs when we get there around Old Netley

Our van comes to the vehicle wherever it stopped — your own driveway, beside St Paul’s Church, or by Bursledon Junior School(CA).

Both the work and our price rest on three answers — what liquid, what amount, and whether it has run — so our engineers ask.

You hear that price by phone, before anybody sets off.

Your system is then purged thoroughly, once your tank is cleared.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

We don't go until it has been fired up and is running properly.

Unstarted vehicles mostly mean a half-hour job from arrival. The kit is fine on a live forecourt, and quiet enough for a driveway late at night.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents your insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

While we travel, have a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.
