# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Old Swan? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, keep your engine off and keep your ignition off.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue.

The trouble begins once it is pulled through your pump — it won't ignite, and it won't combine with diesel.

Caught before your engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Old Swan.

First, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

## What to do straight away, Old Swan: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do:

- So nobody can switch your ignition on, take the keys away.

- If you're at all near moving traffic, put your hazards on.

- So you can give us which fluid it was and about what quantity, save the till receipt or the empty bottle.

- Give us a postcode starting L13 5, or whatever street is closest, and the van finds you straight — so call from wherever you stand.

Not to do:

- Shifting your car even a short way is no reason to fire up the engine.

- Plenty of diesels power their fuel pump the moment your ignition comes on, so keep the vehicle off.

- Adding more diesel does not work: AdBlue settles out instead of thinning.

- Don't drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short distance along Aylesford Road.

- Do not try to drain it yourself at the kerbside.

Get the people behind the counter to help you move your vehicle off the pumps if you are on a forecourt around Old Swan, whether it is the Sainsbury's or elsewhere.

If you're on your own drive, leave the vehicle exactly where it sits.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Made for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your motor.

Stored in a separate tank, it's injected into the exhaust stream to clean the gases.

Neither side suits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and a pump cannot take urea.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once tipped in, will not. The behaviour is nothing like diesel's.

It drops, because it is denser than diesel, and pools down where the pickup takes its fuel from.

Easiest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Stoneycroft last night and has not been started since. The liquid sits at the foot of your tank, undrawn — though it would be first through once your motor runs, before any diesel at all.

It causes two kinds of harm from there.

What remains when the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in tiny passages and block filters. On top of that, it attacks some metals in a fuel system, and carries on till it's flushed out.

If the AdBlue has reached the pipework, leaving it till morning around Old Swan leaves it worse. Inside the tank alone, waiting costs nothing.

The water in it does harm of its own: the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

A problem of thinned fuel is what you end up with from filling a diesel with petrol at the Esso.

Harm only comes from running on it. Mixed into your diesel and sitting inside your tank, it does none.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

Because it does not burn, running it through isn't an option.

Nor can it be watered down, since it separates again — and the following fill will not rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts for more with AdBlue, and trying the engine "to see", in the centre of Old Swan or out in Broad Green, does more harm than almost any other slip.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol.

Wherever in Merseyside the car has stopped, an unstarted engine means the AdBlue still in the tank: the simplest bit of any fuel system to clear.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Old Swan: how it ends up there

It is not on purpose. Plenty of vehicles keep the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel inlet, now and then under one flap, and muddling them up is easy in poor light.

Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

It tends to occur in a couple of familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside St Oswald's Catholic Primary School.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Killarney Road.

One more version: dim light, the car park outside The Old Swan, and a driver opening that flap the first time.

It happens most in the vehicles drivers know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Wherever in Merseyside, Old Swan as well, the slip does not change, and neither does the first step: keep it switched off.

## Started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Old Swan?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside your tank.

With any running, it travels to the high-pressure pump and every injector, having passed via the filter and pipework.

You may notice your engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Broad Green Road Gardens or halfway across Old Swan.

Once you safely can, pull over then switch it off — with no restarting to test.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

Old Swan lies under a mile from the M62; if you were on it, leave by the first junction and pull up somewhere safe instead of carrying on.

Distance counts: every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in, and so heading towards Liverpool, under 3 miles away, makes a much bigger job than crossing Old Swan to the car park by St Oswald's Roman Catholic Church.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Our technicians do all of the flushing where your car has stopped, and once the motor has run there is more of it.

Very seldom does it leave lasting damage if it is spotted quickly.

## Emptying AdBlue in a diesel around Old Swan: what it takes

A street beside All Saints Stoneycroft, a drive, a layby or a filling station: wherever the vehicle has stopped in Old Swan, our engineers come to it.

The job depends on three answers, and we get first — which fluid was put in, the amount, and whether the motor has turned over.

Then that tank is cleared where the vehicle sits, so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush matters: the fuel system is flushed all the way through because residue won't flush out unaided.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Engine not run? Then count on about half an hour on site for most jobs.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough not to disturb the street at night.

Bleeding the fuel system with fresh diesel comes at the end.

Whether it's a parking bay by Wavertree Technology Park or a drive in Old Swan, that is where we fire it up and you drive off.

Our technicians confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel before we leave.

The whole job is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a garage.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

## About Old Swan, briefly

Old Swan is a suburban area located inland in Merseyside, approximately 2.7 miles from Liverpool city centre. Old Swan sits at an elevation of around 62 metres, with its predominantly terraced housing stock reflecting the area's historical development. Old Swan is close to several local amenities, including Oak Hill Park and Tillerman Court. Old Swan forms part of the larger Liverpool urban area, with easy access to the city's facilities.

## Old Swan and Merseyside: AdBlue drains across the area

AdBlue jobs in Old Swan are passed to teams that serve the places near it — Tillerman Court, Oak Hill Park as well as Stanley — and much of Merseyside beyond, throughout L postcodes.

Phone and ask instead of guessing when you are by a border, or somewhere tricky to pin down.

Old Swan is a residential suburb, and a mobile drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our technicians drain it where it sits, so it never needs to be moved to us.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Old Swan

Every job is different, and so no fixed price is fair.

What moves the price is, firstly, whether the engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and then where the car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Old Swan Library.

For that in mind, each enquiry from Old Swan begins by asking the same trio — what went in, how much, if the engine ran — ahead of any figure.

Once they are answered, a range turns into one fixed number.

You get that price by phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Look at your policy while we are on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.

## In Old Swan and still next to your car?

Then the most handy thing you can do is nothing to the car.

Engine off, keys out, ignition off.

Tell us it was AdBlue, about what quantity, and if the engine ran, on 0333 366 0103. After that Petrol in Diesel takes over, in Old Swan or wherever in Merseyside.
