# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Oldfallow? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep your motor off — and your ignition too.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

As it is water-based, it won't ignite and never combines with diesel; trouble just starts when the pump starts drawing it.

If your motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually emptied and thoroughly cleaned where the vehicle stands in Oldfallow.

Nothing comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Oldfallow: the first few minutes

Do these:

- So nobody can switch the ignition on, pull the keys away.

- Put the hazard lights on if you are at all near moving traffic.

- Keep the receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what went in and about how much.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting WS11 4, or the name of the closest street, brings the van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

- Not even for a second, and not to roll your vehicle: the engine stays off.

- Many diesels power their fuel pump the instant the ignition goes on, and so keep the vehicle off.

- Adding extra diesel doesn't help: AdBlue separates out instead of thinning.

- Keep the car where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short stretch down Lansbury Drive.

- Do not try to drain the vehicle yourself by the kerbside.

At a forecourt around Oldfallow, whether it's the the nearest petrol station or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll the vehicle away from the petrol pump.

If you are on your own drive, leave the vehicle exactly where it sits.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the motor.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it.

A fuel pump is not designed to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

It does not blend. After it's poured into the tank, AdBlue behaves nothing like diesel.

It drops, since it's denser than diesel, and pools down where the pickup takes its fuel from.

Easiest of all: one that had AdBlue in Chadsmoor last night and has not been started since. The AdBlue sits at the foot of the tank, undrawn — but it would be first through once your engine starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

Once it is drawn in, the harm takes two forms.

What is left once the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in tiny channels and block filters. On top of that, it attacks some metals in a fuel system, and carries on till it's cleared out.

By daybreak, a vehicle parked in Oldfallow with AdBlue in its lines grows worse; if it is only inside your tank, it doesn't.

Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector depend on diesel running through them, and so the water content harms them by itself.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger fault?

A problem of thinned fuel is what you end up with from filling a diesel with petrol from the Asda.

Blended into your diesel and left unused, it's no threat at that stage; running the engine does the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

It does not burn, so it can't just be run through.

Nor can it be thinned, because it separates back out — and the following fill will not clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts for more here, and trying your engine "to see", in the heart of Oldfallow or out in Cannock, does more harm than nearly any other mistake.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol.

If your motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside the tank, and your tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Staffordshire your car is sitting.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Oldfallow?

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of vehicles waits right next to the diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

A container picked up while heading home and poured in at home, rather than at the forecourt, is the usual route.

Mostly, it occurs in one of a few familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside Moorhill Primary School.

A driver pours the container in at home, right off Boswell Road, as the day ends.

Else, after dark outside The White Lion, your vehicle gets topped up by a driver using that flap for the first time.

It takes place most in the vehicles drivers know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

An identical slip, same first step — keep it off — wherever you happen to be around Oldfallow or the remainder of Staffordshire.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Oldfallow, and the engine started?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside that tank.

The filter and pipework have had it pulled along, and any running time takes it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Lumpy running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard warnings or stalling: any might appear, maybe midway across Oldfallow or returning from Cannock Park Golf Course.

No restarting to test: stop once it is safe, then turn everything off.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

If you were on the M6 Toll, under 3 miles from Oldfallow, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Oldfallow to the car park by St Aidan is a very different job from a run towards Lichfield, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with each mile.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Our technicians do all of the cleaning where the vehicle has come to a stop, and once the engine has been run there is more of it.

If it's noticed quickly, permanent damage is very unusual.

## Oldfallow: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

We come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped around Oldfallow: a side street near Chadsmoor Methodist Church, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Before anything else our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and if the engine has run, since those answers decide the work.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave together after the tank is emptied, on the spot.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush counts: the whole system is flushed all the way through since what remains will not wash out by itself.

Clean diesel goes in once your filter is cleaned — or swapped, if it needs to be — and then the vehicle is tested.

Engine not run? In that case expect roughly half an hour on site for most jobs.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the street at night.

Finally, your system is primed with clean diesel.

Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where your car is parked, at Cannock or on a drive in Oldfallow.

It's checked on fresh diesel to make sure it runs smoothly before we leave.

No garage is required at any stage, with the whole job done then and there.

Afterwards, there is the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

## About Oldfallow, briefly

Oldfallow is a suburban area in Staffordshire, situated approximately 8.6 miles from Lichfield and 115.5 miles northwest of London. Oldfellow is not the correct term, Oldfallow sits in a relatively high position at 183 metres, overlooking the surrounding countryside. Oldfallow is characterised by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock, with nearby neighbourhoods including Broomhill and West Chadsmoor.

## AdBlue drains across Staffordshire, Oldfallow included

Broomhill, West Chadsmoor and Blackfords are among the towns around Oldfallow that the same teams serve, along with most of Staffordshire further out, over the WS postcode area.

Ring and ask rather than guess when you're close to a county line, or somewhere awkward to pin down.

No moving is needed. In Oldfallow, a residential suburb, a van that comes to you works: the car is drained where it stands, be it on a driveway, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt.

## Oldfallow: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Not one flat figure could be honest, since every job differs.

Whether your engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the price. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the position of your car, since an open drive is easier for a van to get to safely than a tight spot behind St Chad.

What went in, how much, plus whether the engine ran: each Oldfallow enquiry begins with precisely that, before a figure, not after.

With them, a range narrows to a single fixed number.

You get that price on the phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## In Oldfallow and still alongside the vehicle?

Right now, the most helpful thing to do with your vehicle is to not touch it.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.

Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us it's AdBlue, roughly how much, and if it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Oldfallow or anywhere across Staffordshire.
