# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Orchard Square

Engine off, ignition off: that is where you start if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank.

Urea dissolved in water is all AdBlue is.

Not like fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and no harm starts until the engine pulls it round.

In Orchard Square, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before your engine runs normally means a drain and a thorough flush, right where your car is.

Nothing comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Orchard Square: the first few minutes

Do:

- Remove the keys, which stops anyone turning the power on.

- If you're at all near moving traffic, put the hazards on.

- Which product, and roughly what amount? Hang on to the bottle or the till receipt, and our engineers will see.

- Ring just where you are. Say a S1 2 postcode or the nearest street sign, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Never do these:

- Don't start your motor, even for a moment to move the car.

- Don't switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Don't drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch up Orchard Place.

- No emptying it yourself, at all, at the verge.

Get the attendants to help you move your car away from the pumps if you're on a forecourt around Orchard Square, whether it's the Shell or somewhere else.

At home, the car remains just where it is.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in your engine.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

It does not blend. Once it's tipped into the tank, AdBlue acts nothing like diesel.

Heavier than diesel, it sinks and collects underneath it — the very spot the intake sucks from.

The first thing the system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Park Hill last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

It causes two kinds of harm from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps running on the components it reaches for as long as it remains there.

Lines holding AdBlue spell harm by morning for a vehicle sitting in Orchard Square. Just in your tank, it stays the same.

Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector need diesel running through them, and so the water part harms them by itself.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's often worse than petrol

Top up a diesel with petrol in error over at the BP, and this issue is diluted fuel.

Blended through the diesel and sitting unused, it's no threat at that stage; using the engine does the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether.

It cannot just be run through, because it doesn't burn.

Deposits and corrosion remain through the next fill, and AdBlue splits again out of the diesel, and so thinning it won't help. That is why the flush counts so much, and trying your engine "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other mistake — in Port Mahon or the heart of Orchard Square alike.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

If your engine has not run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and your tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across South Yorkshire the vehicle is sitting.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Orchard Square: how it ends up there

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many cars sits right next to your diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

A container picked up when heading home and poured in at home, instead of at the filling station, is the usual route.

It tends to happen in a couple of familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside Springfield Primary School.

Someone pours the bottle in outside their house, just off Exchange Gateway, as the day ends.

One more pattern: dim light, the car park by The Museum, and someone using that flap for the first time.

The least familiar vehicles see it the most — hire cars, brand-new cars, fleet ones, and the spare car in a family with both fuel types.

Anywhere in South Yorkshire, Orchard Square included, the mistake doesn't change, and nor does the first response: leave it off.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Orchard Square, and your engine started?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank.

With any running time, it travels to the injection pump and each injector, having passed through your filter and lines.

You may notice the motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Fountain Precinct or halfway across Orchard Square.

Stop when it is safe. Switch off. Leave it off rather than testing it again.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

Orchard Square lies under 5 miles from the M1; if you were on it, leave at the first junction and pull up somewhere safe rather than carrying on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Orchard Square to the car park by the centre is a very different job from a run towards Sheffield, under a mile away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

There's more to rinse out once the motor has run, and our technicians do all of it where the vehicle has ended up.

Very rarely does it leave long-term damage when it is spotted soon.

## What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves in Orchard Square

Anywhere it has come to rest around Orchard Square — a forecourt, a lay-by, a driveway, a street by John Brown — our van comes to the car.

The work rests on three answers, and our engineers ask for first — what was put in, the amount, and if your motor has run.

On the spot, the tank is then emptied, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea leave at once.

Your system is flushed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

Testing the car comes last, after clean diesel is added and the fuel filter is cleaned or, if necessary, swapped.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once we arrive, provided the motor hasn't run.

The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Priming your system with fresh diesel comes last.

At that point we fire it up and you head off, whether from a parking space outside Sheffield or a drive in Orchard Square.

We check it runs properly on clean diesel before leaving.

Our engineers do it all wherever your car has stopped, and it never has to go to a workshop.

The insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

Orchard Square is a short distance from the city's main amenities and attractions, with Sheffield city centre just 0.1 miles away.

## AdBlue drains across Orchard Square and South Yorkshire

Sheffield, Kelham Island and Netherthorpe are among the towns around Orchard Square that the same vans serve, together with much of South Yorkshire beyond, throughout the S postcode area.

Phone and ask instead of guessing when you're by a county line, or anywhere tricky to pin down.

No towing is needed. In Orchard Square, a neighbourhood, a mobile service works: the vehicle is emptied where it stands, be it on a driveway, a side street, a parking area or a filling station.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Orchard Square?

No flat figure would be fair, because each job differs.

Three things change the cost: whether the engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where the car is. That last one turns on whether our van can get to it safely, and an open driveway is easier than a tight spot behind TK Maxx.

For that reason, each call from Orchard Square begins by asking the same trio — what got in, how much, whether it ran — before a figure.

The replies turn a range into a straight price.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

As our engineer is travelling, check your policy: many cover misfuelling.

## Still alongside the vehicle around Orchard Square?

Leaving your vehicle alone is, right now, the best move open to you.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us it is AdBlue, roughly how much, and whether it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Orchard Square or anywhere around South Yorkshire.
