# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Ordsall

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep the engine off — and your ignition too.

Urea dissolved in water is what AdBlue is.

The trouble begins once it's pulled through your pump — it will not ignite, and it will not combine with diesel.

If the engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and thoroughly rinsed where the vehicle sits around Ordsall.

Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

## Ordsall, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do at once

Things to do:

- So no one can switch your ignition on, pull the keys out.

- Put the hazards on if you're at all close to moving traffic.

- So you can give us which fluid it was and about how much, save your receipt or the empty bottle.

- The van finds you quickest with a postcode starting M5 3, or simply the name of a street close by, so phone from the car.

Never do these:

- Moving your vehicle even a few yards is no reason to start the engine.

- Plenty of diesels power their fuel pump the moment your ignition comes on, and so keep the car off.

- Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Do not drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short distance up Ordsall Lane.

- Emptying the tank on your own by the road isn't one to try.

Get the attendants to help you move the vehicle off the island if you are on a forecourt in Ordsall, whether it is the Shell or somewhere else.

On the drive, the vehicle stays exactly where it was left.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

Stored in a separate tank, it's injected into the exhaust stream to treat the fumes.

Nothing inside a fuel pump is designed for this fluid — and none of that was meant to travel that way.

It doesn't blend. Once it's poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts nothing like fuel.

Heavier than diesel, it drops and collects below it — the very place the intake sucks from.

When the pump runs, the AdBlue is first to be pulled through. Until then it sits beneath the diesel, which is why a vehicle topped up in Wallness yesterday and not started remains the straightforward case, provided no one turns the key.

Once it's sucked in, the damage takes two forms.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that crystallises in filter elements and narrow channels; and, since it eats at certain metals, each part it touches suffers for as long as it remains inside.

Pipes carrying AdBlue mean harm overnight for a car sitting in Ordsall. Only in the tank, it stays the same.

The water in it causes harm of its own: the high-pressure pump and your injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's often worse than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on JET's forecourt makes your fuel thin — that's the main fault.

Mixed through your diesel and left still, it's harmless at that stage; using the engine is the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is another problem: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

It cannot just be run through, because it doesn't burn.

Crystals and corrosion remain after the next tankful, and AdBlue splits back out of your diesel, so watering it can't help. That is why the flush matters so much, and turning your key "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other mistake — in Hulme or the heart of Ordsall equally.

As with petrol, there's good news.

If the engine has not run, the AdBlue is still inside that tank, and the tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Greater Manchester the car is sitting.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Ordsall?

In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap — may appear the same. No one means it; plenty of layouts allow it.

Usually it is not the forecourt: a driver picks up a bottle heading home and pours it in at home.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Primrose Hill Primary School and Children's Centre the top-up is hurried.

In the evening, a container goes in on a driveway near Oldfield Road.

One more pattern: dim light, a pub car park by Welcome Inn, and someone using that flap the first time.

The least familiar vehicles see it most — rentals, new cars, fleet ones, and the other car in a family with both fuel types.

Keep it switched off: that's the first response to an identical slip, anywhere in Ordsall or the remainder of Greater Manchester you are.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Ordsall, and the engine started?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then.

Via the fuel filter, along the lines, and — with any running time — into the high-pressure pump and each injector: that is where it has gone.

Rough running, smoke, lost power, dashboard warnings or stalling: any might appear, maybe midway across Ordsall or returning from Regent Square.

Once safe, pull over and switch everything off — with no turning it on again to test.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

On the Mancunian Way, under a mile from Ordsall, the first junction is where to exit, and anywhere safe is where to stop — not driving on.

Hopping across Ordsall to the car park by Ordsall Library is one thing; driving for Manchester, under 3 miles away, is something else, because each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. So mileage counts.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

There's more to rinse out once the engine has run, and our technicians do all of it where the vehicle has ended up.

Spotted soon, it very seldom leaves long-term damage.

## Ordsall: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

A street beside St Clement, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station: anywhere the vehicle has come to rest around Ordsall, we come to it.

Three replies shape the job, so before anything else we ask what was put in, roughly what quantity, and whether the engine has run.

Then your tank is cleared where the car stands, and so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

The fuel system is cleaned thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

Clean diesel goes in after your filter is cleaned — or swapped, if it needs to be — and after that the vehicle is tested.

Roughly half an hour on site is typical for most jobs when your motor has not run.

The equipment is explosion-proof, and so a live forecourt is no issue, and it's hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

New diesel goes in to prime the fuel system, and that's the last step.

Then our engineers start it and you drive off, whether from a parking space at Deansgate or a drive around Ordsall.

It's tested on clean diesel to confirm it runs correctly before our engineers leave.

No workshop is needed at any stage, with the entire job done then and there.

Afterwards, you are given paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

## Ordsall and Greater Manchester: AdBlue drains across the area

The vans that answer AdBlue jobs in Ordsall also cover the locations round it, St Georges, Old Trafford and New Windsor among them, and most of Greater Manchester beyond, across the M postcode area.

If you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask rather than assuming.

Wherever the vehicle stands — your drive at home, a side street, a parking area, a forecourt — our engineers empty it on the spot, and there's no need to take it to us; that suits Ordsall, a residential suburb, well.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Ordsall?

Because the jobs differ, a single figure would not be fair.

Three things change the cost: whether your engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where the vehicle is. That last one comes down to whether a technician can get to it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight gap behind Evacuation of Salford's children, Second World War.

That's why each call from Ordsall starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and whether it has run.

Once those are known, a range turns into one firm number.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## Still next to your car around Ordsall?

Then, touch nothing — that's the best move available.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us it's AdBlue, roughly how much, and whether it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Ordsall or anywhere in Greater Manchester.
