# How It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Orsett

Leave your engine and ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Caught before your motor runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Orsett.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Diesel goes to the engine — but plenty of modern diesels seen round Orsett and Horndon on the Hill hold another liquid too.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There is a filler for each tank.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

At the petrol pump, your diesel side is topped up constantly.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less regularly, usually from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

The slip lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Orsett: how it occurs

Carelessness rarely explains it. Instead is three things lining up together.

Hurry comes from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a drive off High Road, or heading home in the car park outside The Whitmore Arms.

Unfamiliar motors come second, as well. Rentals, new vehicles and company vehicles place their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as readily, and once the tip starts, no part halts it.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Orsett or out in Baker Street.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A few seconds is all these take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Little Thurrock or a forecourt in Orsett.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- Plenty of cars fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Look inside the fuel flap: plenty of vehicles carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler sits if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Stanford-Le-Hope, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Essex that is.

- Switch off once parked — level ground, engine off, and not in a rush beside Rectory Road on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" out loud while unscrewing it. It seems silly. It does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, then check again — confirm the diesel filler remained shut throughout. Only then, start the vehicle.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Step five is off limits.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Orsett already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch it on.

Filling up with diesel won't weaken it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the base of the tank, just where fuel is taken from.

On a forecourt — BP, Esso or another — the staff will usually help roll the vehicle away, if you ask.

Your own driveway in Orsett is where it should stay.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run.

Come off the M25 — under 5 miles out of Orsett — at the next exit.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Orsett is less work than a run of under 15 miles towards Southend-on-Sea, so say.

## When we turn up around Orsett, what happens?

Outside Orsett Church of England Primary School, near St Giles and All Saints, Orsett or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it has run, since the answers settle the work and our quote.

During the phone call itself, you are told the quote — ahead of anything else.

Next: draining, then a full flush of the whole system.

More than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: crystals build up, certain metals corrode, and nothing clears away unaided, however long it is left.

Once your filter is cleaned — or renewed, if required — fresh diesel goes in, and finally your vehicle is tested.

After that we fire it up and make sure it runs properly before we leave.

Using pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the motor has not run need roughly half an hour after our engineers arrive.

No money in advance; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

Wrong-fuel cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — so make use of the wait to look at yours.

## Orsett and Essex: AdBlue drains across the area

Throughout RM postcodes, the teams that cover Orsett — a rural village — work the surrounding places too, Orsett Heath and Southfields among them.

Quote a postcode that starts RM16 3, and the van arrives fastest.

Shifting your car is not needed.

Draining happens right there, be it a drive, a road by Orsett Village Hall, or a layby on the way to Orsett Golf Club.

Tricky to pin down, like the back of The Scout Association? Close to a border? Asking is better than assuming, and so ring.

## For Orsett drivers, the short version

Read the cap before you pour.

Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, anywhere around Essex, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless — so leave the vehicle off then call 0333 366 0103.
