# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Osmaston? Keep It Switched Off

Motor off, ignition off: that is how you start if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank.

Urea dissolved in water is all AdBlue is.

Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and nothing starts till the motor sucks it through.

Caught before your engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Osmaston.

Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Osmaston: the first few minutes

Do:

- Keys out — that way nobody can power anything on.

- Put your hazards on if you're anywhere close to moving traffic.

- Which fluid, and about how much quantity? Save the bottle or the receipt, and we will know.

- Tell us a postcode starting DE24 8, or whatever street is nearest, and the van finds you straight — so ring from wherever you are.

Things not to do:

- No starting the motor — not briefly, not to shift your vehicle.

- Your ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to start the pump.

- No more fuel added. The AdBlue will not blend, so it's wasted.

- Do not drive it anywhere, not even a short distance up Nightingale Road.

- Draining that tank on your own by the road is not worth trying.

Moving the vehicle away from the island is a job for staff to help with, whichever Osmaston forecourt you are on, the Sainsbury's included.

On your own driveway, don't move it at all.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

From a separate tank it is fed straight to your exhaust, treating what your engine lets out.

No part inside an injection pump is made for this liquid — and no part of that was intended to travel that way.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It does not mix in.

Heavier than diesel, it drops and pools below it — the very place the pickup sucks from.

Once your system runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to go through. Before then it waits beneath the diesel, which is why a vehicle filled in Rose Hill last night and never started remains the simple one, provided nobody turns your key.

Two kinds of harm follow from there.

What remains when the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in tiny channels and clog filters. On top of that, it attacks some metals in a fuel system, and keeps going till it's cleared out.

Overnight, a car sitting in Osmaston with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; where it is only inside your tank, it doesn't.

Then there's the water: it brings no lubrication to the components that rely on it the most — the injection pump and every injector.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's often worse than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol in error over at the BP, and the problem is diluted fuel.

Harm just comes from running on it. Blended into the diesel and sitting in your tank, it causes nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether.

Because it doesn't burn, running it through isn't an option.

Whether the car is in Crewton or the heart of Osmaston, firing it up "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other error, and the flush matters for more. Why: it won't remain mixed, and so diluting it is impossible; and deposits and corrosion survive the following tankful.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

If the engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside your tank, and your tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Derbyshire your car is standing.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Osmaston

Many motors put the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel cap, now and then behind one flap, and in dim light the two can appear identical. No one intends it.

Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the forecourt.

A few familiar ways cover the majority of them.

Rushing, outside Ashwood Spencer Academy, after a warning light came on during the school run, someone refills the car.

In the evening, a container goes in on a drive close to Osmaston Park Road.

Or someone new to that flap tops up the vehicle after dark, stopped in the car park by The Chestnut Tree.

Hired vehicles, brand-new motors, company cars, or the spare car in a home with both fuels: the least familiar vehicles see it most.

Keep it off: that's the first step to an identical mistake, wherever in Osmaston or the remainder of Derbyshire you happen to be.

## Already started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Osmaston?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then.

Through the fuel filter, along the lines, and — with any running — into the injection pump and every injector: that's how far it travels.

You may notice the engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Osmaston Park or halfway across Osmaston.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to check.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

On the M1, under 10 miles from Osmaston, the next junction is where to exit, and somewhere sensible is where to park — not carrying on.

Mileage counts: each mile pushes the AdBlue further into your system, so driving towards Derby, under 3 miles away, makes a far larger job than crossing Osmaston to the car park by St Bartholomew's Church.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

There's more to flush once the motor has been run, and our engineers do all of it where the car has ended up.

Very seldom does it leave long-term damage if it's noticed early.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Osmaston?

The car stays put, whether that's a road beside Moorways Sports Village and Water Park, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt around Osmaston, and the van travels to it.

What got in, roughly the quantity, and if the motor has been run: our technicians check first, because those decide the work.

Then that tank is cleared where the car waits, and so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing matters: the whole system is flushed right through because residue won't wash out by itself.

Clean diesel goes in once the fuel filter is cleaned — or replaced, if it needs to be — and then your car is tested.

Not run? In that case count on roughly half an hour on site for most jobs.

Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Finally, the fuel system is primed with clean diesel.

You drive off as soon as we have started it, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a driveway in Osmaston or in a space outside Peartree.

Before we leave, our engineers check it is running smoothly with new diesel in.

Because the job is done in full where your car is, a workshop never comes into it.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers ask for.

## AdBlue drains across Osmaston and Derbyshire

The vans that answer AdBlue calls around Osmaston also cover the spots about it, Allenton, Pear Tree and Wilmorton among them, and most of Derbyshire beyond, across the DE postcode area.

Close to a border, or anywhere awkward to explain? Asking is better than guessing, and so ring.

No moving is needed. In Osmaston, a residential suburb, a mobile service fits: the car is emptied where it stands, be it in a drive, a side street, a car park or a forecourt.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Osmaston

Because the callouts differ, a single price would not be honest.

The cost moves first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that was put in. After that it depends on where the car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Rolls-Royce Fitness Centre.

What went in, what quantity, and whether it ran: every Osmaston enquiry begins with precisely those, before a quote, not afterwards.

Those replies shrink a range down to one figure.

Before anyone heads out, you hear the price on the phone. And you pay on the day, card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

While the van is on the way, dig out your policy: many include misfuelling.

## Osmaston: still beside your car?

Right now, the best thing to do with the car is to not touch it.

Keys out, engine off, ignition off.

Say it's AdBlue, about what quantity, and if it ran, on 0333 366 0103. After that Petrol in Diesel handles it, in Osmaston or anywhere within Derbyshire.
