# Why It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Osney

Stop here a minute if your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when your engine has not run, it is emptied and fully rinsed where your vehicle sits in Osney.

The remainder of this page explains why it occurs and how to make sure it does not — useful if you're reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Plenty of newer diesels around Jericho, as well as Osney, carry on two liquids; the motor gets just the diesel.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, where a spray cleans the gas.

Every tank comes with a filler of its own.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the layout on many cars. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Diesel gets filled at each filling station call-out, week in, week out.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less commonly, usually from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

Mistakes happen in that gap between them.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Osney: how it occurs

Carelessness seldom explains it. Instead is three things lining up at once.

Hurry follows from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a drive off South Street, or on the way home in the car park at The Punter.

Then the car is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

Whether it occurs in New Osney or the middle of Osney, it's the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A few seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you tip anything, on a drive in Oxford or a forecourt in Osney.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Check inside the fuel flap: many cars have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows where it lives when the filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The previous driver knows. Check as you pick up a hire car or fleet car — at Oxford's car park, say — rather than when the warning appears.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Oxfordshire that is.

- Turn off once parked — flat ground, motor stopped, and not in a rush by East Street on the verge.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It sounds silly. It works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.

- Stop once that tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, pour gently through the built-in spout.

- Before you start your car, shut the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap was never came off.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Skip stage five entirely.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Osney?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your engine.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — so leave it off.

Thinning it with more diesel fails, because AdBlue settles to the base rather than mixing — and that is where your fuel is sucked from.

Ask the attendants to help push the car away from the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the BP, the Shell or somewhere else.

If you're on your own driveway around Osney, leave the vehicle where it is.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

The next junction is the place to leave when you're on the Wheatley Spur, under 10 miles from Osney.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Osney is smaller a job than a trip of under a mile towards Oxford, and so say.

## When we get there around Osney, what takes place?

Our technicians come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside West Oxford Community Primary School, close to St Frideswide's Church or on your own drive.

Which liquid was put in, the amount, and whether it ran: we ask since those replies set both work and quote.

The price comes on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Emptying that tank comes next, then a thorough flush of the system.

More than with petrol, it counts here: the crystals form, certain metals corrode, and nothing washes out unaided, no matter how long it sits.

A test comes last: before that, clean diesel is added, and the filter is cleaned or replaced if necessary.

The motor is fired up next and tested to be sure it runs properly, all before our engineers head off.

Unrun vehicles mostly mean a half-hour visit from arrival. The kit is fine on a busy forecourt, and quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

It's worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.

## AdBlue drains around Osney and across Oxfordshire

Over OX postcodes, the vans covering Osney — a residential suburb — work the surrounding places too, North Hinksey Village and New Botley included.

Fastest of all: give a OX2 0 postcode for our van.

Shifting your car is not necessary.

We drain it where it is — a side street close to The First Superconducting Magnet for MRI Scanning, a lay-by on the way to Oatlands Road Recreation Ground, a driveway.

Assuming doesn't help at the back of West Oxford Community Centre, on a border, or somewhere awkward to pin down; ring and check.

## Osney drivers: the short version

Read the cap before you tip.

Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, anywhere across Oxfordshire, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank regardless — and so leave the car off then phone 0333 366 0103.
