# Otterspool: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does your motor.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when the fuel system pulls it in.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Otterspool, is normally all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before your motor has been run.

Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

## Otterspool, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do right away

Things to do:

- Keys out — then nobody can power anything on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.

- Which fluid, and about how much amount? Save the bottle or the receipt, and our engineers will see.

- The van finds you fastest with a postcode starting L17 5, or simply the name of a street nearby, and so phone from the spot.

Things not to do:

- Do not start the engine, even for a moment to move your car.

- Turning the key to ignition alone sets your pump going on many diesels. Skip it.

- AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel will not thin it.

- Even a short stretch up Otterspool Drive is too far to drive the car.

- Don't try to drain the car yourself at the roadside.

The attendants on duty at any Otterspool forecourt — the Shell included — will normally help rolling it clear if you ask.

If you are on your own drive, leave the vehicle just where it stands.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your engine.

Kept in a separate tank, it's injected into the exhaust stream to treat the fumes.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

It doesn't blend. Once it is poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts nothing like diesel.

The intake sucks fuel from the lowest part of your tank, and that is exactly where AdBlue settles: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks.

A motor topped up on a drive in Sefton Park yesterday evening and left unstarted is the straightforward case. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up so far — but when the motor runs, that's what goes first, straight from the bottom of that tank.

After it is pulled in, the harm comes in two forms.

It eats at some metals used in fuel systems, attacking whatever it touches until it's cleared from the system. And when the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and lodge in narrow channels.

By daybreak, a car parked in Otterspool with AdBlue in its lines grows worse; if it is just in that tank, it doesn't.

Water protects nothing. The injection pump and each injector need diesel running past them, and so the water part harms them in its own right.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more major than petrol

A problem of thin fuel is what you get from filling a diesel with petrol from the BP.

Mixed through your diesel and sitting still, it's no threat for now; running your engine is the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether.

Because it does not burn, running it through isn't an option.

Crystals and corrosion stay through the following tankful, and AdBlue splits back from your diesel, so thinning it won't help. That is why the flush matters more, and trying the engine "to see" costs more here than almost any other slip — in Aigburth or the centre of Otterspool alike.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Never run? Then the AdBlue waits only inside that tank, the easiest bit of the whole system to empty, wherever your vehicle has come to rest across Merseyside.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Otterspool: how it ends up there

Plenty of cars put the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel one, now and then under one flap, and in dim light the two can look the same. No one intends it.

Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

A few familiar ways cover most cases.

The top-up is hurried outside Sudley Primary School, after the dash flashed with a warning while the children were dropped off.

Close to Riverside Drive, a driver tips a bottle in at home after work.

Otherwise, after dark by The Old Bank, the car gets topped up by a driver opening that flap for the first time.

Rented motors, new cars, company motors, or the second vehicle in a home with one of each: the least familiar cars see it the most.

Wherever you're in Otterspool or the rest of Merseyside, it's the same mistake and the same first answer: leave it off.

## Started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Otterspool?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then.

With any running, it travels to the injection pump and each injector, having passed via the fuel filter and lines.

Expect lumpy running, exhaust smoke, lost power, warnings on your dash, or a stall — returning from Otterspool Park, say, or part way across Otterspool.

Stop when safe. Turn off. Keep the car off rather than restarting it to check.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

Leave the M62, under 5 miles from Otterspool, at the first junction and stop somewhere safe, not driving on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Otterspool to the car park by Former Otterspool Café is a very different job from a run towards Liverpool, under 5 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with every mile.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Our technicians do all of the cleaning where the car has come to a stop, and once the engine has been run there is more of it.

Very seldom does it leave lasting damage if it is spotted early.

## Otterspool: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

A road by Former Otterspool House, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt: anywhere your vehicle has stopped around Otterspool, our technicians travel to it.

What went in, about the quantity, plus whether your engine has turned over: our technicians check first, because those decide the work.

Next, emptying your tank right there takes out the polluted diesel and the AdBlue in one go.

What remains from AdBlue won't wash out by itself, so the whole system gets a careful flush, which counts much more with urea than with petrol.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

If the motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we arrive.

Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

The final step is to bleed the fuel system on new diesel.

Whether it is a parking space at Aigburth or a driveway in Otterspool, that is where we fire it up and you set off.

Before leaving, our engineers confirm it is running smoothly with new diesel in.

We do it all wherever the vehicle has stopped, and it never has to be taken to a workshop.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers ask for.

Phone and check rather than guess if you're by a county line, or somewhere tricky to pin down.

A mobile service fits Otterspool, a residential suburb: you have no need to take your car to us, since we empty it on the spot, in a drive, a side street, a parking area or a forecourt.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Otterspool

Because each callouts differ, a single figure wouldn't be fair.

The price shifts first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that went in. After that it turns on where your car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Everyone's Aigburth.

With that in mind, each call from Otterspool begins by asking the identical trio — which fluid went in, how much, whether it ran — before any figure.

Given those replies, a range narrows to a single firm figure.

The price is quoted during the call, before a van leaves; settling up happens on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.
