# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Ovingdean: How It Happens and How to Avoid It

Keep your engine and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

A drain and a thorough flush, done just where your vehicle stands in Ovingdean, is normally what it needs when caught before the engine runs.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the page explains the reasons it occurs and the how to avoid it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Diesel goes to your engine — but many newer diesels driven round Ovingdean and Whitehawk carry another fluid too.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, and there spraying cleans the fumes.

There's a filler for every tank.

Plenty of motors have a single flap for both, whereas others put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less regularly.

It's in that gap that the error happens.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place around Ovingdean

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

Haste follows from the warning. The car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a drive off Ovingdean Road, or heading home in the car park at the pub in the village.

Then the car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, once started, carries on.

Whether it occurs in Roedean or the middle of Ovingdean, it's the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Check these first, on a forecourt around Ovingdean or a drive over in Black Rock. A few seconds, no more.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by position.

- Many cars fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Lift the filler flap and check for a label — plenty of cars mark which belongs in each filler just there.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by the diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Whoever had it before knows. Ask as you pick up a rental or fleet car — at Moulsecoomb's car park, perhaps — rather than once the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

Wherever across East Sussex the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Longhill Road, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park then switch off first.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you've located your filler and read the cap.

- The diesel cap stays on. When the two share a flap, make sure it's shut before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Skip step five altogether.

## Ovingdean: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor.

Leave the ignition off too, since on plenty of diesels it by itself runs the fuel pump.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it is the Valero or the Esso, ask the attendants to help push the car clear of the pump.

Your own drive in Ovingdean is the place it stays.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your engine has already run.

On the M23, under 25 miles from Ovingdean, that means the next exit.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Ovingdean is smaller work than a trip of under 5 miles to Brighton and Hove, so say.

## When we get there in Ovingdean, what happens?

We come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Rudyard Kipling Primary School & Nursery, close to Ovingdean Village Hall or on your own driveway.

Which liquid went in, the amount, and if it ran: our engineers ask because the replies set the work and price.

Nobody sets off until you've heard the price over the phone.

Then the tank is drained and the system purged thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The filter cleaned or, if needed, replaced; fresh diesel in; then a test of your car.

After that our engineers fire it up and make sure it runs correctly before we leave.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour once our technicians arrive, as long as the motor hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a live forecourt yet quiet at night outside a house.

The insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.

There's no need to move your car.

We drain it where it is — a side street near Ovingdean Grange, a lay-by on the way to Happy Valley, a drive.

Awkward to explain, like the back of St Wulfran's? By a county line? Asking is better than assuming, so phone.
