# Owston Ferry: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Leave the engine and ignition off and call 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Around Owston Ferry, finding it before the engine turns normally leaves draining and a full flush on the spot.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Many modern diesels in Wildsworth, as well as Owston Ferry, run on two fluids; your engine gets only your diesel.

Your exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the gas to fresh them, from a separate tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the arrangement on many cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side gets filled — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

Mistakes happen in the gap between the two.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place in Owston Ferry

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the vehicle, and running dry leads to limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Station Road, perhaps outside The White Hart on the way home that evening.

Unfamiliar vehicles come second, too. Rentals, new motors and company motors put their fillers in new places, and habit goes for the cap it used on the old one.

A spouted bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, after begun, keeps on.

Whether it occurs in East Ferry or the middle of Owston Ferry, it is the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Be it a Owston Ferry forecourt or a drive over in Gunthorpe, spend a couple of seconds over these before any is poured in.

- Check the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.

- Plenty of motors fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.

- Can't see it next to the diesel inlet? In that case check beneath the bonnet or in your boot — the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Gainsborough Central? Check with the person who drove the car last before leaving, not once the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Lincolnshire that is.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Church Street.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, but it does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. When both share a flap, confirm it is shut before lifting the bottle.

- Stop once your tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, pour gently through the built-in spout.

- Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Skip stage five entirely.

## Owston Ferry: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your engine.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels as soon as the ignition goes on — and so keep it off.

Topping up with diesel won't thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of that tank, right where the fuel is taken from.

The staff at the nearest petrol station, Shell or any forecourt will normally help to push the car away when asked.

Your own drive around Owston Ferry is the place it stays.

Already run? Pull over once it's safe, then turn off.

Owston Ferry sits under 5 miles from the M180; on it, take the next junction.

## When our engineers get there around Owston Ferry, what occurs?

Our technicians come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside St Martin's Cofe Primary Academy, near Coronation Hall or on your own drive.

Both the work and the price depend on three replies — which fluid, which quantity, and whether it has run — so our technicians ask.

That quote is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Emptying your tank comes next, followed by a full flush of your system.

More than with petrol, it counts here: the crystals form, some metals are attacked, and none of it washes away on its own, no matter how long it sits.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Before we go, our engineers start the engine and make sure that it is running properly.

Using pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the engine hasn't run need roughly half an hour after our engineers are there.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
