# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Oxshott: Why It Happens

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and your ignition off and call 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a full flush, carried out just where your vehicle sits in Oxshott, is usually what it takes when found before the motor runs.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Many modern diesels around Stoke DAbernon, as well as Oxshott, carry on two fluids; the engine gets just the diesel.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Separate tanks, separate fillers.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled at every forecourt visit, again and again.

Rarely filled, AdBlue normally comes out of a bottle, poured by a driver who has to stop and think what filler to use.

The error lives in that gap.

## Oxshott: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the car, and running out leads to limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Steel's Lane, perhaps outside The Victoria on the way home that evening.

Then your car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in as readily, and after the pour starts, no part stops it.

Pachesham Park or the middle of Oxshott: it is the same few seconds in both.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Ashtead Common or a forecourt in Oxshott, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Check the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue caps are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually are not.

- Plenty of vehicles fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- Can't find it beside the diesel inlet? Then check beneath the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook will say where.

- The previous driver knows. Ask when you collect a rental or fleet car — from the nearest station's car park, say — not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

The day the light comes on, anywhere around Surrey, follow this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Birds Hill Rise, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park then switch off properly.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, yes, yet it works.

- The two behind one flap? So confirm the lid on your diesel side is still closed ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the vehicle, close the cap and look a second time that the diesel cap never opened off.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Don't go on to step five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Oxshott?

Short order, then. Top of it: the engine remains off.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch the car on.

Topping up with diesel will not dilute it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the base of that tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it's the Esso or the BP, ask the staff to help roll the vehicle clear of the petrol pump.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around Oxshott.

Already run? Stop when it's sensible, then turn off.

On the M25, under 3 miles from Oxshott, that means the next junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Oxshott is less work than a run of under 25 miles to Westminster, so say.

## When we turn up around Oxshott, what occurs?

By The Royal Kent CofE Primary School, near Oxshott Village Centre or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, our technicians come to it.

Both the work and the price rest on three replies — which fluid, which amount, and whether it has run — so our engineers ask.

The price is given over the phone, before any van leaves.

Then the tank is emptied and your system rinsed thoroughly.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and neither washes away unaided. Hence it matters more.

After the fuel filter has been cleaned — or renewed, where required — clean diesel is added, and finally your vehicle gets tested.

We don't leave until it has been started and is running correctly.

If your motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.
