# Why It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Pallister

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then set this page down for now, leave the ignition and engine off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Around Pallister, finding it before your motor runs normally means draining and a thorough flush where it stands.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Diesel feeds the engine — yet many modern diesels seen around Pallister and Thorntree hold another fluid as well.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

Other cars put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others have both side by side under one flap.

At the pump, your diesel side gets filled all the time.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less commonly, usually from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

Mistakes happen in the gap between the two.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Pallister: how it takes place

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

Hurry comes from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a driveway off Homerton Road, or heading home in the car park at The Buccaneer.

Then the vehicle is new. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the spout fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in as readily, and after the pour starts, no part stops it.

Berwick Hills or the middle of Pallister: it is the same few seconds either way.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Check these first, on a forecourt in Pallister or a drive out in Park End. A few seconds, no more.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- Cannot find it beside your diesel inlet? Then check below the bonnet or inside your boot — the handbook will say which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside James Cook University Hospital? Ask whoever drove the vehicle last before you set off, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

Wherever around North Yorkshire the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Turn off once parked — flat ground, motor off, and not rushed by Frimley Avenue on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly. It works.

- The two behind a single flap? So make sure the cap on the diesel filler stays shut before raising the bottle.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the car, close the cap and look again that your diesel cap was never came off.

Find during the second or third step that the bottle went into the diesel tank? That is where you stop.

Don't go on to step five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Pallister?

Brief order, then. First: the engine remains off.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the car on.

Filling up with diesel will not thin it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of the tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it's the Morrisons or the Esso, ask the staff to help roll the car clear of the petrol pump.

At home around Pallister? So the car stays put.

When your motor has run by now, pull over safely and turn the car off.

The next exit is the place to leave if you are on the A1(M), under 15 miles from Pallister.

A short hop across Pallister is a smaller job than a run towards Durham, under 25 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival in Pallister, and what happens next

Our van reaches the car anywhere it stopped — your own driveway, near Church of the Ascension, or outside Pallister Park Primary School.

Which fluid got in, the amount, and if it ran: our engineers ask because the replies set the work and price.

No one heads out until you've heard the price over the phone.

Then the tank is emptied and the system cleaned thoroughly.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

After your filter has been cleaned — or renewed, if needed — clean diesel goes in, and then your car is tested.

After that our technicians start the car and check it runs correctly before leaving.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour once we arrive, as long as the motor has not run — and the pumps we use are fine on a busy forecourt yet quiet after dark outside a house.

The insurer will ask for the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.
