# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Panfield: Why It Happens and How to Prevent It

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then set this page aside a moment, keep the ignition and engine off, then call 0333 366 0103.

In Panfield, finding it before the motor runs normally leaves draining and a thorough flush on the spot.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the page covers the why it occurs and the how to avoid it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Many newer diesels in Bocking, as well as Panfield, run on two fluids; the engine takes only your diesel.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, and there a spray treats the fumes.

There's a filler for every tank.

Plenty of vehicles share a single flap for the two, whereas others move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, your diesel side is topped up all the time.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side gets filled — normally from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

Mistakes happen in the gap between the two.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank take place around Panfield?

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

On a drive off St Mary's Close before work, or in the car park outside The Bell on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and once it's empty, limp mode kicks in.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — but a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That is a second thing: a new motor.

A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, after begun, keeps on.

It's a few seconds, whether out in Bocking Churchstreet or bang in the heart of Panfield.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Whether a Panfield forecourt or a drive over in Rayne, take a few seconds over these before anything goes in.

- Check the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually are not.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler sits if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Braintree.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Wherever across Essex the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Switch off after you park — flat ground, motor stopped, and never rushed by Hall Road on the verge.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It sounds daft. It does the trick.

- The two under one flap? So confirm the cap on your diesel side stays closed ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Finish once that tank fills or the bottle is empty; before that, pour slowly using its own spout.

- Only then, start the vehicle: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Find at step two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there.

Don't go on to step five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Panfield?

The short order of things, starting with no starting your motor.

Don't switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it is the Applegreen or the Sainsbury's, ask the staff to help push the vehicle away from the pump.

At home in Panfield? So the car remains put.

When your engine has run by now, pull over somewhere safe then turn the car off.

Panfield lies under 15 miles from the M11; there, use the next junction.

A short hop across Panfield is a smaller job than a run towards Chelmsford, under 15 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When we turn up in Panfield, what takes place?

We come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside John Bunyan Primary School and Nursery, close to Panfield Village Hall or on your own drive.

What fluid went in, the amount, and if it ran: our technicians ask because those replies decide both work and quote.

Nobody sets off until you have heard the price by phone.

Next: draining, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Once the fuel filter has been cleaned — or renewed, where required — clean diesel goes in, and finally the car is tested.

We do not go until it has been fired up and is running properly.

If the engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Your insurer usually wants an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours once the job is done. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

It's worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.
