# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Pant y Pwdyn? Keep It Switched Off

Engine off, ignition off: that's how you start if AdBlue has got into your diesel tank.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when the system pulls it in.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Pant y Pwdyn, is generally all AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before your engine has been run.

First, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank in Pant y Pwdyn

To do:

- So nobody can turn your ignition on, pull your keys away.

- If you are anywhere near moving traffic, put your hazards on.

- Hold on to the receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what went in and about how much.

- The van finds you fastest with a postcode starting NP13 1, or just the name of a street close by, so call from the spot.

Don't do these:

- No starting the motor — not for a second, not to shift the vehicle.

- Switching the key to ignition alone starts your pump going on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.

- Adding extra diesel does not help: AdBlue settles out instead of blending.

- Leave the vehicle where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short distance up Darren Road.

- Beside the road, do not try draining it on your own.

Rolling the vehicle off the island is a job for staff to help with, wherever Pant y Pwdyn forecourt you are on, the Tesco or any other.

At home, the vehicle stays exactly as it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your engine.

From a dedicated tank it is fed straight to your exhaust, cleaning what the engine emits.

Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

It does not combine. Once it's tipped into the tank, AdBlue behaves nothing like diesel.

The pickup sucks fuel from the deepest part of that tank, and that's precisely where AdBlue ends up: being heavier than diesel, it sinks.

The first thing the fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Six Bells last night, and has not been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

It does two kinds of harm from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps working on the parts it hits for as long as it stays there.

Pipes carrying AdBlue spell damage overnight for a car sitting around Pant y Pwdyn. Just inside that tank, it stays stable.

The water in it causes damage of its own: your high-pressure pump and the injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's often worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Texaco and you have a fault of thin fuel.

It mixes with your diesel, and while it is in the tank it does no damage; the damage comes from running your motor on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong liquid.

Not burning, it cannot just be run through.

It does not stay mixed, and so it cannot be diluted. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Pen-y-Bont or the middle of Pant y Pwdyn.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

Emptying a tank is the simplest part on any fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue stays in it — anywhere in Blaenau Gwent the vehicle has stopped.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Pant y Pwdyn?

Plenty of vehicles place the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, occasionally behind a single flap, and after dark the two may appear identical. Nobody intends it.

Most of the time it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

Usually, it occurs in one of a couple of familiar ways.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside the local primary school the top-up is rushed.

In the evening, a container is tipped in on a drive close to Heolgerrig.

Or someone new to that flap refills your car after dark, stopped in the car park by Mitre Inn.

Hired cars, new vehicles, company cars, or the second car in a family with one of each: the least familiar cars see it the most.

Same mistake, an identical first step — leave it off — wherever you happen to be in Pant y Pwdyn or the remainder of Blaenau Gwent.

## Started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Pant y Pwdyn?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank.

The filter and lines have had it pulled through, and any running time carries it on to the high-pressure pump and every injector.

You may see your motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Abertillery Cenotaph or halfway across Pant y Pwdyn.

Stop when it is safe. Turn off. Keep the vehicle off instead of testing it again.

Each start pulls more of that through.

Exit the M4, under 15 miles from Pant y Pwdyn, by the next junction and stop somewhere safe, rather than carrying on.

Mileage matters: every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper into the system, and so heading for Newport, under 15 miles away, gives a far larger job than hopping across Pant y Pwdyn to the car park by Metropole Cultural and Conference Centre.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

There's more to flush once the engine has been run, and our engineers do all of it where the car has stopped.

Caught quickly, it very rarely leaves lasting damage.

## Pant y Pwdyn: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

The vehicle remains where it is, whether that is a road near Abertillery & District Museum, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt in Pant y Pwdyn, and our van comes to it.

What got in, about the quantity, and whether your motor has been run: our engineers check first, because those shape the work.

The polluted diesel and the urea come out as one after the tank is emptied, on the spot.

What remains from AdBlue will not wash out unaided, and so the fuel system gets a full flush, which counts far more with urea than with petrol.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

About half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs when the motor has not run.

Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Fresh diesel goes in to prime the fuel system, and that's the final step.

Whether it is a parking bay outside Llanhilleth or a drive in Pant y Pwdyn, that is where our engineers fire it up and you drive off.

We check it runs properly on clean diesel before we leave.

No garage is required at any point, with the whole job done then and there.

The insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

Pant y Pwdyn is a residential suburb, and a mobile drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it stands, so it never needs to be moved to us.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Pant y Pwdyn: the cost of fixing it

No flat figure could be fair, because each job differs.

Three things change the price: whether the engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where your car is. That last one turns on whether a van can reach it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight gap behind Ebenezer Baptist Church.

For that in mind, each enquiry from Pant y Pwdyn begins by asking the identical trio — what was put in, how much, if the engine ran — before a figure.

Those answers turn a range into a straight price.

You hear that price on the phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

While the van is on the way, dig out your insurance: plenty cover misfuelling.

## Pant y Pwdyn: still next to the car?

Right now, the most helpful thing to do with the vehicle is to leave it.

Keys out; motor and ignition off.

Say it was AdBlue, about what quantity, and whether it ran, on 0333 366 0103. After that Petrol in Diesel takes over, in Pant y Pwdyn or anywhere within Blaenau Gwent.
