# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Pantmawr

If AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank, keep the motor off and keep the ignition off.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when the fuel system draws it in.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Pantmawr, is generally all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before your motor has been run.

Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

## What to do right now, Pantmawr: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Things to do:

- So no one can switch your ignition on, take the keys out.

- If you are at all close to moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.

- Hold on to the till receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what went in and about how much.

- The van locates you quickest with a postcode starting CF14 7, or just the name of a street nearby, and so call from the spot.

Not to do:

- Not even briefly, and not to roll the vehicle: your motor stays off.

- Your ignition remains off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to run the pump.

- AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel won't weaken it.

- Even a short distance along Caer Wenallt is too far to drive the vehicle.

- No emptying it yourself, at all, on the verge.

On a forecourt around Pantmawr, whether it's the Asda or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll the vehicle away from the petrol pump.

On the drive, the vehicle remains just as it was left.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Not the engine but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it's sprayed into your exhaust, and there it cleans the fumes.

A fuel pump is not made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

It doesn't blend. After it is poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves nothing like fuel.

The intake takes fuel from the lowest part of the tank, and that's just where AdBlue settles: being heavier than diesel, it sinks.

Easiest of all: one that had AdBlue in Wenallt last night and has not turned since. The AdBlue waits at the foot of the tank, untouched — but it would be first through if the motor starts, before any diesel at all.

Once it is pulled in, the harm takes two forms.

It eats at certain metals found in fuel components, attacking whatever it touches until it's removed completely. And once the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and settle in tiny channels.

Overnight, a vehicle sitting in Pantmawr with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; where it's just in your tank, nothing changes.

Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector depend on diesel running through them, so the water part harms them in its own right.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

An issue of thin fuel is what you get from filling a diesel with petrol at the Tesco.

It mixes with the diesel, and while it is in that tank it does no harm; the damage comes from running your engine on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is plainly the wrong one.

Not burning, it cannot just be run through.

Whether the car sits in Forest Farm or the centre of Pantmawr, turning it over "to see" does more harm in this case than nearly any other mistake, and the flush counts more. The reasons: it will not remain mixed, and so diluting it is impossible; and crystals and corrosion survive the following tankful.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

If the motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and your tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Cardiff your car is sitting.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Pantmawr?

Many vehicles put the AdBlue filler beside the diesel cap, now and then behind one flap, and in dim light the two may appear the same. No one means it.

It usually takes place at home, from a bottle bought on the journey home, rather than at the filling station.

It tends to occur in a few familiar ways.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside the local primary school the refill is hurried.

After work, a container goes in on a drive close to Lisnagarvey Court.

Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park at Pantmawr Inn, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

The least known cars see it most — rentals, brand-new cars, company ones, and the other car in a family with both fuels.

Wherever around Cardiff, Pantmawr included, the mistake doesn't change, and neither does the first response: leave it switched off.

## Already started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Pantmawr?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank.

The fuel filter and lines have had it pulled through, and any running carries it on to the injection pump and each injector.

Watch for rough running, exhaust smoke, lost power, warnings on the dash, or a stall — coming back from Whitchurch Golf Club, say, or part way across Pantmawr.

No restarting to check: stop when it is safe, then turn everything off.

Each start pulls more of it through.

On the M4, under a mile from Pantmawr, the next junction is where to leave, and somewhere sensible is where to park — not carrying on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Pantmawr to the car park by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a very different job from a run towards Cardiff, under 5 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with each mile.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Wherever the car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush after your engine has been started.

Very seldom does it leave permanent damage if it is noticed soon.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Pantmawr?

Wherever it has stopped around Pantmawr — a filling station, a layby, a driveway, a street beside Twmpath Motte and Bailey — the van comes to the car.

What went in, roughly the quantity, plus whether the motor has turned over: we ask first, since those shape the work.

The polluted diesel and the urea come out together after that tank is emptied, on the spot.

With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush matters: the fuel system is flushed all the way through because what remains will not flush away by itself.

A test of your vehicle follows at the end, once clean diesel goes in and the fuel filter gets flushed or, where necessary, swapped.

Engine not run? Then count on about half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

New diesel goes in to bleed your system, and that is the last step.

Then our engineers fire it up and you drive off, whether from a parking bay at Coryton or a drive around Pantmawr.

Before leaving, we check it's running correctly with new diesel in.

As the job is done in full where your car is, a garage never comes into it.

Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

## About Pantmawr itself

Pantmawr is a suburban area in Cardiff, situated near the River Taff and close to the city centre. Pantmawr has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are predominant in the area. Pantmawr is located near several other suburbs, including Coryton, Rhiwbina, and Whitchurch, and is about 3.9 miles from Cardiff city centre.

## Pantmawr and Cardiff: AdBlue drains across the area

The vans that answer AdBlue call-outs around Pantmawr also cover the spots about it, Coryton, Rhiwbina and Whitchurch among them, and most of Cardiff beyond, across the CF postcode area.

If you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask instead of guessing.

A van that comes to you fits Pantmawr, a residential suburb: there's no need to bring the car to us, because we empty it there, on a driveway, a residential street, a parking area or a forecourt.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Pantmawr?

There is no honest single price, because the jobs are not the same.

What changes the price is, first of all, whether the engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and after that where your car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Rhiwbina Recreation Club.

Before a figure, never after, every enquiry from Pantmawr begins with the same three questions: the liquid, the quantity, plus whether the engine ran.

When they are known, a range becomes one fixed figure.

Priced on the call before the engineer heads out, it is paid for on the day — card or phone, nothing in advance.

Check your insurance while we are on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.

## In Pantmawr and still alongside the car?

Right now, the best thing to do with the vehicle is to not touch it.

Keys out; motor and ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us it is AdBlue, roughly how much, and if it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Pantmawr or anywhere around Cardiff.
