# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Park Farm

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition stays off and so does the motor.

In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

The trouble begins once it is pulled through the pump — it won't ignite, and it won't blend with diesel.

If your motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and carefully rinsed where the vehicle stands around Park Farm.

Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Park Farm

Things to do:

- Keys out — then nobody can switch anything on.

- Near moving traffic? So put the hazard lights on.

- So you can tell us which liquid it was and about what quantity, save the till receipt or the empty bottle.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting PA14 6, or the name of the closest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Don't do these:

- Moving the vehicle even a few yards is no reason to fire up your engine.

- Switching your key to ignition by itself starts your pump going on plenty of diesels. Skip it.

- No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue will not blend, and so it is pointless.

- Even a short way along Mansion Avenue is too far to drive it.

- Do not try to drain the vehicle yourself at the kerbside.

The attendants working at any Park Farm forecourt — the Tesco among them — will usually help rolling it clear if you ask.

If you're on your own drive, leave it just where it stands.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Not your engine but your exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go.

Stored in a dedicated tank, it is injected into the exhaust to clean the fumes.

Neither side suits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and a pump cannot deal with urea.

It does not blend. Once it is poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts not at all like diesel.

It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and collects at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from.

The first thing the system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in High Carnegie last night, and has not been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

After it is pulled in, the damage comes in two forms.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps running on the components it reaches for as long as it stays there.

Pipes carrying AdBlue spell damage by morning for a car sitting in Park Farm. Just in the tank, it stays the same.

The water in it causes damage of its own: the high-pressure pump and your injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger issue?

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Murco's forecourt makes the fuel thin — that's the whole problem.

Damage just comes from running on it. Blended into your diesel and sitting in your tank, it causes none.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is plainly the wrong one.

It can't simply be run through, because it does not burn.

Crystals and corrosion remain after the following tankful, and AdBlue separates back out of the diesel, so watering it won't work. That is why the flush matters so much, and trying the engine "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake — in Bardrainney or the heart of Park Farm equally.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

Clearing a tank is the simplest part on any fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue remains in it — wherever around Inverclyde the vehicle sits.

## Park Farm: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, occasionally under one flap — may look the same. No one means it; many designs allow it.

Usually it's not the forecourt: a driver buys a container driving home and pours it in at home.

A few familiar ways account for most cases.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside the local primary school the top-up is hurried.

Close to Parkhill Avenue, someone tips a container in on that drive in the evening.

Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park at the pub in the village, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

Hired motors, new motors, company cars, or the spare vehicle in a family with both fuels: the least known vehicles get it most.

Same slip, same first response — keep it switched off — wherever you happen to be around Park Farm or the remainder of Inverclyde.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Park Farm, and the motor started?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside that tank.

With any running, it travels to the injection pump and every injector, after passing through your filter and pipework.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard warnings or stalling: any might show up, maybe midway across Park Farm or returning from Woodhall Park.

No starting it again to check: pull over once safe, then switch everything off.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

On the M8, under 5 miles from Park Farm, the next junction is where to leave, and anywhere safe is where to park — not driving on.

How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Park Farm to the car park by St Martin's Parish Church is a very different job from a run towards Glasgow, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with every mile.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Wherever your car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush after the motor has been started.

Very seldom does it leave long-term damage when it's spotted quickly.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Park Farm?

Our engineers come to the car, wherever it has stopped around Park Farm: a side street near Wishing Tree, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Three replies shape the work, and so before anything else our technicians ask which fluid was put in, about the amount, and if the engine has turned over.

Right there, that tank is then drained, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea come out at once.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush counts: the whole system is flushed all the way through since residue won't flush away unaided.

Next, your filter: cleaned, or changed when it has to be. Then fresh diesel, and then a test of the vehicle.

If your motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our engineers are there.

The equipment is explosion-proof, so a live filling station is no problem, and it is hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

The last step is to bleed the fuel system on clean diesel.

Firing it up comes next, and then you set off from where your car is parked, at Woodhall or on a driveway in Park Farm.

It is tested on clean diesel to confirm it runs correctly before our engineers leave.

Our technicians do it all wherever the vehicle has stopped, and it never has to be taken to a workshop.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers ask for.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Park Farm

Since each callouts differ, a flat price wouldn't be fair.

The cost moves first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it rests on where the vehicle is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight gap behind The Church of St Mary the Virgin.

Before a figure, never afterwards, every enquiry from Park Farm opens with three checks: the liquid, the quantity, plus if it ran.

Those answers narrow the range down to one number.

You hear that price by phone, before anyone sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
