# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Park Hall: Why It Occurs and How to Stop It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and your ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your engine runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Park Hall.

The remainder of this page covers why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Many modern diesels in Iron Mills, as well as Park Hall, carry on two liquids; your motor gets just your diesel.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

Many of cars have a single flap for the two, whereas others move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, the diesel side is topped up all the time.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue normally comes from a bottle, tipped by a driver who has to stop and think what cap to use.

It is in the gap that the slip lives.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank happen in Park Hall?

Carelessness rarely causes it. Instead is three things lining up at once.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Park Meadow before work, or in the car park at Ye Olde Boote Inn on the way home.

Unfamiliar cars are second, too. Hire cars, new motors and company cars put their fillers differently, and the hand goes for the cap it used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Park Hall or out in Twmpath.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Check these before pouring, at a forecourt in Park Hall or a drive over in Gobowen. A few seconds, no more.

- Read the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally aren't.

- Many motors fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Look for it.

- Cannot find it beside the diesel inlet? In that case check below the bonnet or inside the boot — the handbook will say where.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Gobowen, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

For the day the warning appears — anywhere you are across Shropshire — a simple routine to follow.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Artillery Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- Both under one flap? Then make sure the cap on your diesel side stays closed ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the car, close the cap and look again that your diesel cap was never opened off.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Step five stays off limits.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Park Hall?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the engine.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the car on.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

On a forecourt — BP, Swan Petroleum or another — the staff will normally help push the car away, when you ask.

If you are on your own driveway around Park Hall, leave it where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run.

Park Hall lies under 25 miles from the M54; on it, use the first junction.

Mileage counts — a short hop across Park Hall is a smaller job than heading under 15 miles to Wrexham — so tell us about how far it went.

## Our arrival around Park Hall, and what takes place next

By Whittington CofE (VA) Primary School, near Park Hall Stadium or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Both the work and the price depend on three replies — what fluid, what amount, and whether it has run — so our engineers ask.

Nobody heads out before you've had our price over the phone.

Then that tank is drained and your system cleaned thoroughly.

More than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: crystals build up, certain metals corrode, and nothing clears away unaided, no matter how long it is left.

Filter cleaned or, where it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a test of the car.

Your engine is started next and checked to confirm it runs correctly, all before our technicians leave.

If your motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents your insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Wrong-fuel cover is part of many insurance policies — so make use of the wait to look at yours.
