# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Park Lane

Engine off, ignition off: that is how you start if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when your fuel system pulls it in.

If your motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and carefully flushed where the car stands in Park Lane.

No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank in Park Lane

Things to do:

- So nobody can turn your ignition on, pull your keys away.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.

- Hold on to the receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what was put in and roughly how much.

- Call right where you are. Quote a M45 7 postcode or the closest street sign, and no one has to hunt for you.

Not to do:

- No starting your engine — not briefly, not to shift your vehicle.

- Do not switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel will not weaken it.

- Don't drive it anywhere, not even a short distance down Hawkstone Avenue.

- By the road, do not try emptying it on your own.

On a forecourt in Park Lane, whether it's the Shell or another one, ask the attendants to help you push the car clear of the pump.

At home, the car remains just as it was left.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

Not one side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in an injection pump, and a pump cannot deal with urea.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once poured in, won't. The behaviour is nothing like diesel's.

The pickup sucks fuel from the deepest part of the tank, and that is exactly where AdBlue settles: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks.

A motor topped up on a drive in Outwood Gate yesterday evening and left unstarted is the simple one. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up so far — though once your engine runs, that is what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of the tank.

Two kinds of damage follow from there.

What is left when the water goes is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in narrow channels and block filters. On top of that, it eats at certain metals in a fuel system, and carries on till it's cleared out.

Where the AdBlue is in the pipework, leaving it overnight around Park Lane leaves it worse. Inside your tank only, waiting costs nothing.

The water in it causes damage of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's often worse than petrol

Top up a diesel with petrol in error over at the Tesco, and this problem is diluted fuel.

Mixed into the diesel and left unused, it's no threat for now; running the motor does the damage.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid itself is simply the wrong one.

Because it does not burn, running it through is not an option.

Deposits and corrosion remain through the following fill, and AdBlue splits back out of your diesel, and so thinning it can't help. That is why the flush counts so much, and turning the key "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other slip — in Besses o th Barn or the heart of Park Lane alike.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

If the engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside your tank, and the tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Greater Manchester the vehicle is standing.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Park Lane

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors waits right next to your diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

It mostly happens at home, from a bottle bought on the journey home, not at the filling station.

The ways it happens are few and familiar.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside Higher Lane Primary School.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Ferndale Avenue.

Or a driver new to that flap refills your vehicle after dark, parked in the car park by The Parkfield Inn.

It comes up the most in a rental, a brand-new car, a company vehicle, or the other motor in a home with one of each fuel types — the cars drivers know the least.

Leave it off: that is the first response to the same slip, wherever in Park Lane or the rest of Greater Manchester you happen to be.

## Already started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Park Lane?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside your tank.

Via your filter, through the lines, and — given any running — into the high-pressure pump and each injector: that's how far it travels.

Rough running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: any may show up, maybe midway across Park Lane or returning from Sedgley Park R.U.F.C Training Ground.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

On the M60, under a mile from Park Lane, the first junction is where to exit, and anywhere sensible is where to park — not driving on.

Mileage counts: each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper into the system, and so driving for Salford, under 5 miles away, makes a much bigger job than hopping across Park Lane to the car park by Whitefield Hebrew Congregation.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

We do all of the flushing where your car has stopped, and once the motor has been run there is more of it.

If it is noticed quickly, permanent damage is very rare.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Park Lane?

Anywhere it has come to rest around Park Lane — a filling station, a lay-by, a drive, a street by War Memorial — our van comes to the vehicle.

The job depends on three answers, and our engineers get before all else — what was put in, the amount, and if your engine has turned over.

Right there, the tank is then emptied, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one.

Your system is rinsed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

A test of your car comes last, after fresh diesel goes in and the filter is flushed or, if needed, swapped.

If your engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there.

Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Fresh diesel goes in to prime the fuel system, and that's the final step.

Whether it's a parking bay outside Clifton or a drive in Park Lane, that is where our engineers fire it up and you drive off.

Before leaving, our technicians make sure it's running correctly with clean diesel in.

The whole job is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a workshop.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

## About Park Lane

Park Lane is a suburban area in Greater Manchester, situated approximately 4.2 miles from Salford and 167.7 miles from London. Park Lane sits at an elevation of 111 metres, characterised by detached housing and a relatively small population of around 2854 residents. Park Lane is located near other local places such as Stand, Chapel Field, and Whitefield, within the North West region of England.

## Park Lane and Greater Manchester: AdBlue drains across the area

The teams that answer AdBlue calls around Park Lane also cover the places round it, Stand, Chapel Field and Whitefield among them, and most of Greater Manchester beyond, across the M postcode area.

If you're near a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask rather than assuming.

Park Lane is a residential suburb, and a call-out drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it is, so it never needs to be moved to us.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Park Lane?

There is no fair single price, since the jobs are not the same.

Three things shift the price: whether the engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where your car is. That last one comes down to whether our van can reach it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight space behind Stand Cricket Club.

Ahead of any quote, never after, each call from Park Lane opens with the same three questions: the liquid, the quantity, plus if it ran.

The replies turn a range into a straight price.

Priced on the call before the van sets out, it is paid for on the day — card or phone, no deposit.

Misfuelling cover comes with plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.

## Park Lane: still beside your car?

Then the most helpful thing you can do is nothing to the car.

Keys out, motor off, ignition off.

Say it was AdBlue, about what quantity, and whether it ran, on 0333 366 0103. From there Petrol in Diesel handles it, across Park Lane or anywhere in Greater Manchester.
