# Why It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Park Mains

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then set this page down a moment, leave the ignition and motor off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Park Mains.

Not happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page explains the why it happens and the how to avoid it altogether.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

No single fluid but two: that's how plenty of newer diesels around Park Mains and East Craigend carry, with diesel for your engine.

The exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the fumes to fresh them, from its own tank.

There is a filler on each tank.

Many of motors share a single flap for the two, whereas others put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up the diesel side at the pump goes on all the time.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue usually goes in from a bottle, poured by a driver who has to stop and think what cap it needs.

The mistake grows in the gap between the two.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank happens around Park Mains

Carelessness rarely causes it. Instead is three things lining up at once.

On a driveway off Park Drive before work, or in the car park at The Braehead Tavern heading home: that is where the hurried top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle warns you, and once it's empty, limp mode kicks in.

The old car's filler is where your hand goes — yet a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That is the second factor: a strange vehicle.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Park Mains or out in West Freeland.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Garnieland or a forecourt in Park Mains, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Go by the cap, not its position.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- Open the filler flap and check for a label — plenty of cars show what goes in which filler just there.

- The handbook shows where it lives when your filler is not next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Dalmuir? Ask whoever drove the vehicle last before leaving, rather than when the light goes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

When the light goes on, wherever around Renfrewshire, use this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Freeland Road, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Spot at step two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? Then stop just there.

Don't go on to step five.

## Park Mains: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Do not start the motor: that is how the short order of things begins.

Do not switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Filling up with diesel won't weaken it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the base of the tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

At a forecourt — Shell, Henry's or another — the attendants will normally help roll the vehicle clear, if you ask.

If you're on your own driveway around Park Mains, leave the vehicle where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your engine has already run.

Come off the M8 — under 3 miles out of Park Mains — at the first exit.

Distance matters — a quick hop across Park Mains is a smaller job than heading under 10 miles to Glasgow — so say about how far it went.

## Our arrival around Park Mains, and what happens next

Wherever the car came to rest, be it by the local primary school, near St Bernadette's R C Church or on your own drive, our van comes to it.

Both the work and the quote depend on three answers — what fluid, what quantity, and whether it's run — so our engineers ask.

You hear that quote by phone, before anybody heads out.

After that: draining, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more here than with petrol.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

After that our technicians start it and check it runs properly before leaving.

If the motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

While we travel, take a look at your insurance documents; plenty include cover for misfuelling.
