# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Park Town

Engine off, ignition off: that's how you start if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank.

Urea dissolved in water is what AdBlue is.

The trouble begins once it is pulled through the pump — it will not burn, and it will not combine with diesel.

In Park Town, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before the motor runs usually means a drain and a thorough flush, right where the vehicle is.

Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

## Your next steps right now, Park Town: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Do these:

- Keys out — then no one can switch anything on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.

- The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the fluid and the amount, so don't bin it out.

- Tell us a postcode starting OX2 6, or whichever street is closest, and the van finds you directly — so ring from wherever you stand.

Things not to do:

- Shifting the vehicle even a short way is no reason to fire up your motor.

- Plenty of diesels power their pump the moment your ignition comes on, and so leave it off.

- Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.

- Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short distance down Park Town.

- Don't try to drain it yourself at the roadside.

At a forecourt around Park Town, whether it is the BP or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll the car away from the petrol pump.

If you are on your own drive, leave the vehicle exactly where it stands.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Made for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in your engine.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it.

Nothing inside a fuel pump is made for this liquid — and none of that was intended to go through one.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after poured in, won't. The behaviour is nothing like fuel's.

The pickup takes fuel from the lowest part of that tank, and that is exactly where AdBlue ends up: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks.

The first thing the system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Jericho last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

It does two kinds of damage from there.

What is left when the water goes is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in tiny channels and clog filters. On top of that, it eats at certain metals in a fuel system, and carries on until it's cleared out.

A motor left sitting around Park Town with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not.

And there is the water: it offers no lubrication to the components that need it most — the injection pump and every injector.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's frequently worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Shell and you have a problem of thin fuel.

It mixes with the diesel, and while it's inside that tank it causes no harm; the damage comes from running the engine on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

Not burning, it cannot just be run through.

Whether the vehicle sits in New Marston or the centre of Park Town, turning it over "to see" costs more in this case than nearly any other slip, and the flush matters for more. Why: it won't stay blended, and so watering it down is impossible; and deposits and corrosion survive the next fill.

As with petrol, there's good news.

Emptying a tank is the easiest job on a fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue remains in there — wherever around Oxfordshire the car sits.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Park Town: how it ends up there

In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, now and then under a single flap — may look the same. Nobody intends it; plenty of layouts allow it.

Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

Usually, it occurs in one of a few familiar ways.

The top-up gets rushed outside St Aloysius' Catholic Primary School, after your dash lit up with a warning while the kids were taken in.

In the evening, a bottle is tipped in on a drive near Bardwell Road.

Otherwise, after dark outside The Rose And Crown, the car gets refilled by a driver using that flap the first time.

The least known vehicles see it most — rentals, brand-new cars, fleet cars, and the spare motor in a home with one of each fuels.

Leave it off: that is the first step to an identical slip, wherever in Park Town or the rest of Oxfordshire you happen to be.

## Started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Park Town?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside the tank.

It's been sucked through your filter and the lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure pump and the injectors.

Maybe returning from Dragon School Fields, or midway across Park Town, the motor may run lumpy, smoke, lose power, light up your dash or cut out.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the vehicle to check.

Every start pulls more of it through.

Park Town sits under 10 miles from the M40; if you were on it, leave at the next junction and pull up safely rather than carrying on.

Every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. That's why a hop across Park Town to park near Flore and a drive of under 3 miles towards Oxford are very distinct jobs.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

There is more to flush once the motor has run, and we do all of it where your car has come to a stop.

Very seldom does it leave long-term damage when it is noticed early.

## Park Town: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

The vehicle stays put, whether that's a road near ADT & Pool, a drive, a layby or a forecourt in Park Town, and our van travels to it.

Before anything else our engineers ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has run, because those replies decide the work.

Then that tank is cleared where the car stands, so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

Residue from AdBlue will not wash out unaided, so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which counts far more here than for petrol.

A test of the car follows last, once clean diesel goes in and the filter is flushed or, if necessary, swapped.

About half an hour on site is usual for most jobs where your engine hasn't run.

Explosion-proof pumps make a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the street at night.

Finally, the fuel system is bled with fresh diesel.

Then we start it and you set off, whether from a parking bay by Oxford or a drive around Park Town.

Before we leave, our technicians confirm it is running correctly with clean diesel in.

The whole job is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a workshop.

At the end, you are given the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer.

## About Park Town and where it is

Park Town is a suburban area located on the riverside in Oxfordshire, sitting at an elevation of 67 metres and close to the city of Oxford. Park Town is characterized by its predominant flat housing and is situated near other notable areas such as Norham Manor, Walton Manor, and Summertown. Park Town is also relatively close to London, being approximately 51.7 miles away, and has a population of around 4710 residents.

## AdBlue drains around Park Town and across Oxfordshire

Norham Manor, Walton Manor and Summertown are among the places near Park Town that the same teams serve, along with most of Oxfordshire further out, over the OX postcode area.

If you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask rather than assuming.

Park Town is a residential suburb, and an on-site drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it sits, so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Park Town?

Not one flat figure could be fair, since every job is different.

Three things change the price: whether your engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where your car is. That last one rests on whether our van can get to it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight spot behind Gym.

Which fluid got in, how much, and if the engine ran: every Park Town call opens by asking exactly those, before any quote, never after.

Given those replies, a range shrinks to one fixed number.

You get that price by phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Check your policy whilst we're on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.

## In Park Town and still next to the vehicle?

Not touching the car is, then, the best thing you can do.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Ring 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, and whether the engine ran is everything our engineers ask. Petrol in Diesel handles the remainder throughout Oxfordshire, Park Town too.
