# Park Villas: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Pause reading a minute if the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when the engine hasn't run, it's emptied and thoroughly cleaned where your car is around Park Villas.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Not one fluid but two: that is how many newer diesels near Park Villas and Gledhow carry, with diesel for the engine.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust stream to clean it.

Each tank comes with one filler of its own.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the layout on many motors. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

At the petrol pump, your diesel side is topped up constantly.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly.

The error lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Park Villas: how it takes place

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a drive off Park Villas before work, or in the car park at The Roundhay Fox heading home: that's where the rushed top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car warns you, and once it is gone, limp mode kicks in.

Then the car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Lastly, the bottle fits: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in as easily, and after the tip begins, nothing halts it.

It takes a few seconds, be it out in Lidgett Park or right in the centre of Park Villas.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Slaid Hill or a forecourt around Park Villas, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Trust the cap, not its position.

- On plenty of motors, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Look for it.

- The handbook says which it is if the filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The previous driver will know. Ask when you pick up a rental or company car — from Cross Gates's car park, perhaps — not once the warning appears.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across West Yorkshire that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Old Park Road, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park and switch off first.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" aloud as unscrewing it. It sounds silly. It does the trick.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Leave out stage five altogether.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Park Villas?

The short order of things, starting with not starting your motor.

Do not switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Filling up with diesel will not weaken it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the base of your tank, just where the fuel is drawn from.

The attendants at ASDA Fuel, BP or any forecourt will usually help to push the vehicle clear when asked.

## Our arrival in Park Villas, and what occurs next

Our van comes to your car anywhere it has come to rest — your own driveway, near Canal Gardens, or outside Talbot Primary School.

Both the work and our price rest on three answers — what fluid, what quantity, and whether it has run — so we ask.

On the phone call itself, you hear the quote — before dispatch.

Emptying your tank comes next, then a full flush of the fuel system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Filter cleaned or, if needed, replaced; fresh diesel in; then a test of the vehicle.

Your engine is started next and checked to confirm it runs properly, all before our technicians head off.

Unstarted vehicles usually mean a half-hour visit after the moment we arrive. The kit is safe on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents an insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Before we get there, take a look at your insurance documents; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.
