# Park: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case set this page aside for now, keep the ignition and engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Park.

Here before the event? In that case the rest covers how it happens and how to stop it ever happening.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Many current diesels on the roads about Park and Low Baildon carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There is a filler on each tank.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the layout on many cars. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Filling your diesel side at the pump happens constantly.

The AdBlue side is filled far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

The slip lives in that gap.

## Park: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

Carelessness rarely explains it. What does is three things lining up at once.

On a drive off Park Lane before work, or in the car park outside The Halfway House Bar & Dining heading home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it is empty, limp mode follows.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — but a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That is a second thing: a strange motor.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after begun, keeps on.

Whether it occurs in Tarn or the middle of Park, it's the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Whether a Park forecourt or a drive over in Charlestown, take a few seconds on these before any is poured in.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- On plenty of vehicles, the size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Open the filler flap and check for a label — plenty of motors show what goes in each filler right there.

- The handbook says which it lives if the filler is not next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Baildon, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

The day the light goes on, anywhere around West Yorkshire, use this routine.

- Pull in somewhere level, engine off, with time to spare — never rushing on the side of Langley Lane.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft. It works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting your car, shut the cap and check again that your diesel cap was never came off.

Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? So stop just there.

Leave out stage five altogether.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Park?

The short order of things, beginning with not starting the engine.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch it on.

Topping up with diesel won't thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of your tank, right where fuel is taken from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it's the Esso or the UK Petroleum, ask the attendants to help push the car away from the pump.

If you're on your own driveway in Park, leave the vehicle where it stands.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your motor has already run.

Come off the M606 — under 10 miles out of Park — at the next junction.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Park is smaller work than a run of under 5 miles to Bradford, so say.

## What happens when we arrive in Park

Our engineers come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Baildon Church of England Primary School, near Cup and Ring Stone or on your own drive.

Those replies decide the work and the price, and so our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it has run.

During the phone call itself, you are told the price — ahead of anything else.

Emptying that tank comes next, then a thorough flush of your system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and neither washes out unaided. That is why it matters more.

The filter flushed or, where it must be, swapped; fresh diesel in; then a test of your car.

We do not go until it has been started and is running smoothly.

If the motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Before we get there, take a look at your policy; many include cover for misfuelling.

## About Park itself

Park is a suburban area in West Yorkshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 91 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Park lies approximately 4.2 miles from Bradford and is close to nearby places such as Tarn, Tong Park, and Brook Hill. Park is part of the larger urban area surrounding Bradford, with the city's amenities and services within easy reach. Park has a population of around 3161 residents.

## AdBlue drains across West Yorkshire, Park included

As a residential suburb, Park has the same vans as nearby areas — Tong Park, Brook Hill — all the way across BD postcodes and the wider area beyond.

Fastest of all: quote a BD17 7 postcode to the van.

Shifting the car isn't needed.

The drain takes place on the spot, be it a driveway, a road by St James Church, or a lay-by towards Tong Park Playarea.

Ring and ask instead of assuming if you're close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Tong Park Memorial.

## In short, for Park drivers

First, the cap; after that, the pour.

Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere around West Yorkshire, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless — so leave the vehicle off then call 0333 366 0103.
