# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Parklands: Why It Happens

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Parklands.

The rest of this page explains why it happens and how to make sure it does not — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Many newer diesels on the roads about Parklands and Killingbeck carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, where a spray treats the fumes.

Each tank has a filler of its own.

Many of vehicles share a single flap for both, while some move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up the diesel side at the pump goes on all the time.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less frequently.

The slip lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Parklands: how it occurs

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

On a drive off Foundry Lane before work, or in the car park at Seacroft Working Mens Club on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle warns you, and if it's gone, limp mode follows.

The old car's filler is where the hand goes — but a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That's the second thing: a new motor.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

Whether it takes place in The Oval or the middle of Parklands, it's the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Check these before pouring, on a forecourt around Parklands or a drive over in Brooklands. Seconds, no more.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones are often blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally do not.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Lift the filler flap and look for a label — many cars mark which belongs in each filler just there.

- The handbook says where it lives if the filler isn't next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The previous driver will know. Ask when you collect a hire car or fleet car — from Cross Gates's car park, say — not once the light appears.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

Wherever around West Yorkshire the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Ironwood Approach, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park then switch off properly.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you've found the filler and read the cap.

- The two under one flap? Then confirm the lid on your diesel side is still shut before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Find during the second or third step that the bottle went into the wrong tank? That's where you stop.

Don't carry on to stage five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Parklands?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor.

Keep your ignition off too, because on many diesels it by itself runs your pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it's the BP or the Shell, ask the staff to help push the car clear of the petrol pump.

Your own drive around Parklands is where it stays.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Come off the M1 — under 3 miles out of Parklands — at the next exit.

A short hop across Parklands is a smaller job than a run towards Leeds, under 5 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival around Parklands, and what happens next

The van comes to your car anywhere it has come to rest — your own driveway, near Chris & Sharon Bell, or by Seacroft Grange Primary School.

Those answers determine this work and our quote, and so our engineers ask what was put in, about how much, and whether it has run.

You hear that price on the phone, before anybody sets off.

Emptying the tank comes next, then a full flush of the fuel system.

More than with petrol, it counts here: crystals build up, certain metals are attacked, and none of it washes away unaided, however long it sits.

A test comes at the end: before that, clean diesel is added, and the fuel filter is flushed or changed if necessary.

We do not go until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your engine hasn't run take roughly half an hour after we arrive.

The insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

## AdBlue drains across West Yorkshire, Parklands included

Parklands is a residential suburb, and the vans that cover it also work the places near it, Cross Gates and Brianside among them, across the LS postcode area.

Quickest of all: quote a LS14 6 postcode for the van.

Moving the car is not necessary.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street near Killingbeck Cemetery, a lay-by on the way to Foundry Lane Playing Fields, a driveway.

If you are near a border, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Church of Ascension, ring and ask rather than assuming.

## Parklands motorists: the short version

First, the cap; after that, the pour.

AdBlue in the diesel tank regardless? Keep it off then call 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, throughout West Yorkshire.
