# Passmonds: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then put this page aside a moment, leave the ignition and engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, done just where the vehicle stands in Passmonds, is usually what it needs when caught before your motor runs.

The rest of this page covers why it takes place and how to ensure it doesn't — useful if you are reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads about Passmonds and Spotland Fold carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the arrangement on a lot of cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

The diesel side is fuelled at the pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place in Passmonds

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

On a drive off Whalley Road before work, or in the car park outside The Ratcliffe Bars heading home: that is where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle warns you, and once it's gone, limp mode kicks in.

Unfamiliar vehicles are next, as well. Hire cars, new vehicles and company vehicles put their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap it used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, after started, keeps on.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Passmonds or out in Caldershaw.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Spotland Bridge or a forecourt in Passmonds, check these. They take a few seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- Many cars fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Open the flap and look for a label — plenty of vehicles show which belongs in which filler just there.

- The handbook shows where it is when your filler isn't next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Rochdale? Ask the person who drove the car last before leaving, not when the light goes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Wherever in Greater Manchester the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Pull in somewhere level, motor off, with time to spare — not rushing on the side of Baildon Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? So stop right there.

Don't carry on to step five.

## Passmonds: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Brief order, then. Top of that: your motor stays off.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels as soon as the ignition goes on — so keep it off.

Filling up with diesel will not thin it: instead, AdBlue drops to the base of that tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

At a forecourt — Esso, Texaco or any other — the staff will normally help roll the vehicle clear, when you ask.

Your own driveway around Passmonds is where it stays.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your engine has already run.

The next junction is the place to leave if you're on the A627(M), under 3 miles from Passmonds.

A short hop across Passmonds is a smaller job than a run towards Manchester, under 15 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## When our engineers get there in Passmonds, what takes place?

Our engineers come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside St Vincent De Paul Roman Catholic Primary School, A Voluntary Academy, close to Crown Oil Arena or on your own drive.

The answers settle this work and our price, and so we ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it's run.

You get that price on the phone, before anyone heads out.

The fuel system is then cleaned thoroughly, after that tank is drained.

Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: the crystals form, certain metals are attacked, and nothing clears away unaided, no matter how long it is left.

The filter cleaned or, if it must be, swapped; fresh diesel in; and then a test of your vehicle.

Then our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs correctly before we go.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour once we arrive, as long as the motor has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are safe on a live forecourt and quiet at night beside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It's worth looking at your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.
