# How It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Pelaw

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and your ignition off and call 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when the engine has not run, it is drained and thoroughly flushed where your car is around Pelaw.

Reading in advance? Then the rest explains why it happens and what to prevent it happening at all.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Plenty of current diesels on the roads about Pelaw and Heworth carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There is a filler for every tank.

Other cars keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more place the two together behind one flap.

The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time.

Seldom filled, AdBlue usually comes out of a bottle, poured by a driver who has to stop and think what filler to use.

It's in the gap that the error lives.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur in Pelaw?

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

Hurry comes from the warning. The vehicle warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a drive off Queen Victoria Street, or heading home in the car park at The Pelaw Inn.

The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — yet a rental car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That is the second thing: a strange motor.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after started, keeps on.

Bill Quay or the middle of Pelaw: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Look at these before pouring, on a forecourt around Pelaw or a drive over in St Anthonys. Seconds, that's all.

- Position misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps are often blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually don't.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of motors, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler is if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Heworth? Check with the person who drove it last before you set off, not when the light goes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

The day the light goes on, anywhere in Tyne and Wear, use this routine.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Duke Street.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" out loud while unscrewing it. It sounds silly. It works.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where both share a flap, confirm it is closed before the bottle comes up.

- Stop once your tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, tip gently through the own spout.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to step five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Pelaw?

Don't start the engine: that's how the short order of things starts.

Leave your ignition off too, since on many diesels switching it on by itself starts your fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel will not dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the base of that tank, right where the fuel is drawn from.

The attendants at Jet, JET or any forecourt will normally help pushing the vehicle away when asked.

Your own drive around Pelaw is the place it should stay.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the engine has already run.

Pelaw sits under 3 miles from the A194(M); on it, use the next junction.

A short hop across Pelaw is a smaller job than a run towards Newcastle upon Tyne, under 5 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival around Pelaw, and what takes place next

Our engineers come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside St Alban's Catholic Primary School, Pelaw, near St Alban's or on your own drive.

What liquid went in, the amount, and whether it ran: our technicians ask because those replies decide both work and price.

No one heads out before you have heard the price over the phone.

Draining your tank comes next, then a thorough flush of your system.

More than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: crystals build up, certain metals are attacked, and nothing clears out unaided, no matter how long it sits.

A test is last: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the filter is flushed or replaced if necessary.

We do not go until it has been started and is running properly.

Unstarted vehicles mostly need a half-hour job after the moment we arrive. The kit is safe on a live forecourt, and hushed enough for a driveway after dark.

No money in advance; you settle up that day. At the end, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

It is worth checking your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.

Your car doesn't need to move.

Wherever it sits — near Pelaw Library, on a layby heading to St Mary's Church Hall garden, at home — that's where it is drained.

Ring and ask rather than assuming if you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Hertfordshire House Community Centre.

Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, anywhere across Tyne and Wear, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank regardless — so leave it off then ring 0333 366 0103.
