# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Pelton: Why It Happens

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if your engine hasn't run, it's drained and thoroughly rinsed where the car sits in Pelton.

The remainder of this page covers why it happens and how to ensure it does not — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of modern diesels in Newfield, like those in Pelton, carry on two fluids; the engine takes just your diesel.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust gas and cleans it.

Each tank has its own filler.

Some vehicles put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others have both together behind one flap.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less regularly, normally from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## Pelton: how AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place

It is seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a drive off Front Street before work, or in the car park outside The Crown heading home: that is where the hurried top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle warns you, and if it is gone, limp mode follows.

Next, the hand goes for the cap it knew on the old motor — because a rental car, a new motor or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, once begun, carries on.

Whether it happens in Perkinsville or the middle of Pelton, it's the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Check these before pouring, on a forecourt around Pelton or a drive over in South Pelaw. Seconds, that's all.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- Look inside the fuel flap: many cars have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows which it is when the filler isn't next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The previous driver will know. Check when you collect a rental or fleet car — from Chester-Le-Street's car park, say — rather than once the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

For the day the warning appears — anywhere it is around Durham — a routine to use.

- Not in a rush on the side of Pelton Lane, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park and switch off first.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, yes, yet it does the trick.

- The two under a single flap? Then make sure the cap on the diesel filler stays shut before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start your car, shut the cap and check again that your diesel cap was never came off.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Pelton already?

Don't start the motor: that is where the short order of things starts.

Leave your ignition off too, since on plenty of diesels it by itself starts your pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it's the Esso or the Shell, ask the attendants to help push the vehicle clear of the pump.

On your own drive in Pelton? So the car stays where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run.

Leave the A1(M) — under 3 miles out of Pelton — at the next exit.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Pelton is smaller a job than a trip of under 10 miles towards Durham, and so say.

## What occurs when our engineers get there in Pelton

By Pelton Community Primary School, near Pelton Library or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, we come to it.

Those answers determine this work and our quote, and so we ask what got in, roughly how much, and if it's run.

Nobody sets off before you've had the price over the phone.

Emptying your tank comes next, then a thorough flush of your system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that counts more here than with petrol.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Before we leave, we start the car and make sure that it is running properly.

Using pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine hasn't run take about half an hour after our technicians arrive.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents an insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Misfuelling cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to look at yours.

## AdBlue drains around Pelton, and Durham beyond

As a rural village, Pelton shares its vans surrounding places — Pelton Fell, Ouston — all the way across DH postcodes and the wider area beyond.

Our van gets to you fastest with a postcode starting DH2 1.

Moving the vehicle is not necessary.

We drain it where it is — a side street near Pelton Youth And Community Centre, a lay-by on the way to Stellagill Wood, a drive.

Guessing doesn't help at the back of Perkinsville Methodist Church, close to a border, or somewhere awkward to describe; phone and check.

## Pelton motorists: the short version

Always, the cap; after that, the pour.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway, leave it off then call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel clears it where it waits, anywhere across Durham.
