# Pelynt: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and your ignition off then call 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if your motor hasn't run, it is emptied and thoroughly rinsed where your car sits around Pelynt.

Here in advance? Then what follows explains how it happens and what to stop it happening at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Many current diesels on the roads around Pelynt and Muchlarnick carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Your exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the gas to fresh it, from its own tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Plenty of vehicles share a single flap for the two, whereas others put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time.

Rarely filled, AdBlue normally comes from a bottle, tipped by someone who must stop and think what filler to use.

That gap is where the error lives.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Pelynt: how it occurs

Carelessness seldom causes it. What does is three things lining up together.

Haste comes from the warning. The car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a driveway off Summer Lane, or on the way home in the car park at Jubilee Inn.

Then, the hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old vehicle — because a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

Trelawne or the heart of Pelynt: it is the same few seconds in both.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Trefanny Hill or a forecourt around Pelynt, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- On many cars, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Look inside the fuel flap: many vehicles have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- Can't find it next to the diesel filler? In that case look beneath the bonnet or inside your boot — the handbook will say which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Sandplace.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

Wherever around Cornwall the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Wilton Terrace, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park and switch off first.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap works — once you've found your filler and read it.

- The diesel cap remains on. When the two sit under a flap, make sure it's shut before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Never carry on to stage five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Pelynt?

The short order of things, beginning with no starting the engine.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch it on.

Diluting it with more diesel won't work, since AdBlue settles to the bottom instead of mixing — and that is where your fuel is drawn from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it's the Texaco or the another forecourt nearby, ask the staff to help roll the vehicle clear of the petrol pump.

On your own drive in Pelynt? So the car remains put.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Come off the M5 — under 50 miles out of Pelynt — at the next junction.

A short hop across Pelynt is a smaller job than a run towards Plymouth, under 25 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When our technicians turn up in Pelynt, what occurs?

Our van comes to the vehicle wherever it stopped — your own driveway, near St Nun, or outside Pelynt Primary Academy.

The answers determine this work and the quote, so our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and if it has run.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anyone heads out.

The system is then cleaned thoroughly, after the tank is cleared.

More than with petrol, it matters here: crystals form, certain metals are attacked, and nothing clears away on its own, however long it is left.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

We do not go until it has been started and is running correctly.

Unrun cars mostly need a half-hour visit from the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a busy filling station, and quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

No money in advance; you settle up on the day. At the end, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Before we get there, take a look at your policy; plenty include cover for misfuelling.
