# Pen-y-maes: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

Engine off, ignition off: that is how you begin if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank.

Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when the system pulls it in.

Caught before your motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Pen-y-maes.

Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Pen-y-maes: the first few minutes

Do:

- So nobody can turn your ignition on, pull your keys away.

- If you are anywhere near moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.

- Which fluid, and roughly what quantity? Hang on to the bottle or the receipt, and our engineers can see.

- Tell us a postcode starting CH8 7, or whichever street lies nearest, and the van reaches you directly — so call from wherever you stand.

Never:

- Don't start your engine, even for a moment to move the vehicle.

- Many diesels power their fuel pump the moment your ignition comes on, and so keep the car off.

- No extra fuel added. The AdBlue won't blend, so it's pointless.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short stretch up Sealand Avenue.

- Do not try to drain the vehicle yourself at the roadside.

Rolling your vehicle off the island is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Pen-y-maes forecourt you're on, the Shell or any other.

At home, the vehicle stays just as it was left.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the engine.

Kept in a separate tank, it is injected into the exhaust to treat the fumes.

Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

Poured in with your diesel, it keeps apart instead of mixing — entirely different from fuel.

It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from.

Simplest of all: one that got AdBlue in Whelston overnight and hasn't been started since. The liquid sits at the base of your tank, undrawn — but it will be the first thing through once the engine starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

Two kinds of harm follow from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it leaves urea that hardens in filter elements and narrow passages; and, because it eats at some metals, every part it touches keeps suffering for as long as it remains inside.

A motor left standing around Pen-y-maes with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't.

Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and each injector as it passes; water gives none of that, and that is a separate form of harm.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is often more significant than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the another forecourt nearby and you have a problem of thin fuel.

Mixed through your diesel and left unused, it is harmless for now; using the engine is the damage.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable liquid.

Since it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option.

Nor can it be watered down, since it separates back out — and the following tankful will not rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters more with AdBlue, and trying the engine "to see", in the centre of Pen-y-maes or out in New Brighton, does more harm than almost any other mistake.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol.

Clearing a tank is the easiest part on any fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue remains in it — anywhere across Flintshire the vehicle has stopped.

## Pen-y-maes: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many cars rests right next to the diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

A bottle picked up while driving home and poured in at home, rather than at the filling station, is the usual route.

Mostly, it occurs in one of a few familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside the local primary school.

In the evening, a container goes in on a drive close to Fron Las.

Or a driver new to that flap tops up the vehicle in dim light, stopped in the car park by Abbots Arms.

It occurs most in the motors drivers know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Anywhere around Flintshire, Pen-y-maes as well, the slip does not change, and nor does the first step: keep it switched off.

## Started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Pen-y-maes?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside that tank.

With any running time, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and every injector, having passed via the filter and lines.

You may notice your engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Coed Bagillt or halfway across Pen-y-maes.

Pull over when it is safe. Switch off. Leave the car off instead of restarting it to check.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

Exit the M53, under 10 miles from Pen-y-maes, by the first junction and stop somewhere safe, rather than carrying on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Pen-y-maes to the car park by Groes Omen Windmill is a very different job from a run towards St Asaph, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with each mile.

Let us know about how far it had come.

There's more to clean out once your engine has run, and we do all of it where the vehicle has ended up.

If it's noticed soon, long-term damage is very unusual.

## Draining AdBlue in a diesel around Pen-y-maes: what it takes

The vehicle remains put, whether that is a road near English Congregational Church, a driveway, a layby or a filling station around Pen-y-maes, and the van comes to it.

Three answers decide the work, so before anything else we ask which fluid went in, roughly what quantity, and whether the motor has turned over.

On the spot, your tank is then drained, and both the polluted diesel and the urea come out as one.

Residue from AdBlue will not wash out by itself, so the whole system gets a full flush, which counts much more with urea than with petrol.

Next, the fuel filter: cleaned, or changed when it must be. Then clean diesel, then a check of the car.

Roughly half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs where the engine has not run.

Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough not to disturb the street at night.

Clean diesel goes in to prime the fuel system, and that's the last step.

After that we start it and you set off, whether from a parking bay at Flint or a driveway in Pen-y-maes.

It is checked on new diesel to make sure it runs properly before our technicians leave.

We do it all wherever your car has stopped, and it never has to be taken to a garage.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers ask for.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Pen-y-maes: the cost of fixing it

No single price could be fair, because every job is different.

Whether the engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what changes the price. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the location of your car, because an open driveway is simpler for a van to get to safely than a tight spot behind Garreg Ateb.

What went in, how much, plus if it ran: every Pen-y-maes enquiry begins by asking exactly that, ahead of a figure, never after.

Given those replies, the range shrinks to one firm figure.

Quoted by phone before the van sets out, the job is paid for that day — card or phone, no deposit.

Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.

## In Pen-y-maes and still next to the car?
