# Pen-y-wern: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Leave the engine and ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Usually, when your motor has not turned, it's drained and fully flushed where your vehicle sits around Pen-y-wern.

The remainder of this page explains why it occurs and how to make sure it does not — useful if you are reading ahead of time.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Many modern diesels on the roads about Pen-y-wern and Dowlais Top carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue usually comes out of a bottle, tipped by a driver who must stop and think which cap to use.

That gap is where the error lives.

## Pen-y-wern: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens

Carelessness rarely explains it. What does is three things coming up at once.

On a drive off Heads of the Valleys Road before work, or in the car park at The Pantyscallog Inn heading home: that is where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle warns you, and if it's empty, limp mode follows.

The old car's filler is where the hand reaches — yet a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That's the second thing: an unfamiliar vehicle.

Third, the spout goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in as readily, and after the tip begins, nothing halts it.

It's seconds, whether in Pant or bang in the centre of Pen-y-wern.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A few seconds is all these take — so check them before you tip anything, on a drive in Pen-y-Darren or a forecourt in Pen-y-wern.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by the diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Merthyr Tydfil, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

Anywhere across Merthyr Tydfil the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Stop on level, motor off, with time in hand — never hurried on the side of Pant Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It seems silly. It does the trick.

- The two under a single flap? Then confirm the lid on the diesel side stays closed ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Finish when the tank fills or the bottle is empty; before that, tip gently using its own spout.

- Only after that, start the car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Do not go on to step five.

## Pen-y-wern: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

The short order of things, starting with not starting the engine.

Keep your ignition off as well, since on plenty of diesels it by itself starts your fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

On a forecourt — Esso, Asda or another — the staff will normally help roll the vehicle away, if you ask.

At home in Pen-y-wern? So the car remains put.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the engine has already run.

On the M4, under 25 miles from Pen-y-wern, that means the next exit.

About how far did it go? Crossing Pen-y-wern is less work than a run of under 25 miles to Newport, so tell us.

## Our arrival around Pen-y-wern, and what takes place next

Our technicians come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside the local primary school, close to Christchurch Pant or on your own driveway.

Our technicians ask what got in, about how much, and whether it has run, since the answers decide this work and the quote.

Nobody heads out before you have had the quote by phone.

The fuel system is then rinsed thoroughly, once the tank is emptied.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of that clears away by itself. That is why it counts more.

After your filter is flushed — or replaced, where needed — fresh diesel is added, and then the car is tested.

Before we go, we fire it up and confirm that it is running correctly.

If your motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
