# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Penallt

Motor off, ignition off: that's how you begin if AdBlue has got into your diesel tank.

Chemically, AdBlue is just urea in water.

As it is water-based, it will not burn and won't blend with diesel; damage just starts once your pump starts drawing it.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Penallt, is usually what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before the motor has been run.

First, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank in Penallt

Do:

- Remove the keys, and that prevents anyone switching the electrics on.

- Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.

- Which product, and roughly how much quantity? Hang on to the bottle or the receipt, and our engineers can know.

- Our van locates you quickest with a postcode starting SA15 1, or just the name of a street nearby, so call from the car.

Don't do these:

- Shifting your vehicle just a short way is no reason to fire up the engine.

- Switching the key to ignition by itself starts the pump going on many diesels. Skip it.

- Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short stretch along Heol Capel Isaf.

- No emptying it yourself, at all, on the roadside.

Rolling the vehicle away from the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Penallt forecourt you're on, the BP included.

Parked on your own driveway? Then it remains just where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

Kept in a dedicated tank, it's injected into the exhaust to treat the gases.

Not one side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in an injection pump, and an injection pump can't take urea.

It doesn't blend. Once it's tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts not at all like diesel.

It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from.

Simplest of all: one that had AdBlue in Halfway overnight and hasn't turned since. The liquid waits at the foot of the tank, undrawn — though it will be first through once the engine starts, before any diesel at all.

It does two kinds of damage from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that hardens in filters and tiny passages; and, since it attacks some metals, every part it touches keeps suffering for as long as it remains in there.

A motor left standing around Penallt with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't.

Diesel protects the injection pump and each injector as it passes; water offers none of that, which is a second form of harm.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel frequently the bigger fault?

A fault of thin fuel is what you end up with after fuelling a diesel with petrol from the Morrisons.

Damage only comes from driving on it. Blended into the diesel and sitting inside the tank, it does none.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

It can't simply be run through, because it does not burn.

Deposits and corrosion remain through the following tankful, and AdBlue separates back out of the diesel, so thinning it can't help. Hence the flush matters so much, and trying your engine "to see" does more harm here than almost any other mistake — in Llanerch or the centre of Penallt alike.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

Not started? Then the AdBlue sits only inside your tank, the simplest bit of the entire system to empty, wherever the vehicle has come to rest in Carmarthenshire.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Penallt

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors rests right next to your diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

A bottle picked up while heading home and tipped in at home, rather than at the forecourt, is the typical story.

It tends to occur in a few familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside the local primary school.

In the evening, a bottle goes in on a drive close to Frondeg Terrace.

One more version: darkness, the car park outside The Jock Stein Lounge, and a driver using that flap for the first time.

The least known vehicles see it the most — rentals, brand-new ones, fleet cars, and the other vehicle of a home with both fuels.

Same mistake, an identical first response — keep it switched off — wherever you happen to be in Penallt or the remainder of Carmarthenshire.

## Started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Penallt?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank.

Your filter and lines have had it pulled along, and some running time carries it on to the injection pump and every injector.

Expect rough running, exhaust smoke, lost power, warnings on your dash, or a stall — coming back from Penygaer Playing Fields, perhaps, or midway across Penallt.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to check.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Exit the M4, under 5 miles from Penallt, by the first junction and park somewhere safe, not carrying on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Penallt to the car park by Stebonheath Park is a very different job from a run towards Swansea, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with every mile.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

There's more to rinse out once the engine has run, and our engineers do all of it where the car has come to a stop.

Very seldom does it leave lasting damage when it's spotted early.

## Draining AdBlue in a diesel around Penallt: what it takes

The car remains where it is, whether that is a road near Christadelphian Hall, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt around Penallt, and our van travels to it.

Three answers shape the job, and so first we ask what got in, roughly what quantity, plus if your motor has run.

Right there, your tank is then drained, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea leave at once.

What remains from AdBlue will not wash away unaided, and so the fuel system gets a full flush, which matters far more here than for petrol.

Fresh diesel goes in once the filter is flushed — or swapped, if it needs to be — and then the vehicle is tested.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our technicians turn up, if your engine has not run.

Explosion-proof pumps make a live forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the street at night.

New diesel goes in to bleed the fuel system, and that is the final step.

You head off as soon as we have started the engine, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a drive around Penallt or in a bay by Llanelli.

It is tested on new diesel to make sure it runs smoothly before our technicians leave.

No garage is required at any point, with the entire job done on the spot.

The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over once the job is done.

## About Penallt, for a moment

Penallt is a suburban area in Carmarthenshire, situated near the coast of Wales, with an elevation of around 22 metres. Penallt lies close to the nearby cities of Swansea and the surrounding areas of Capel, Box, and Coed Cae. Penallt has a population of approximately 3832 residents, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Penallt is located about 9.7 miles from Swansea and 172.7 miles from London.

## AdBlue drains across Carmarthenshire, Penallt included

AdBlue call-outs around Penallt go to vans that cover the places around it — Capel, Box plus Coed Cae — and most of Carmarthenshire beyond, throughout SA postcodes.

Phone and check rather than guess when you're by a county line, or anywhere tricky to explain.

No moving is needed. In Penallt, a residential suburb, a van that comes to you fits: the car is drained on the spot, be it in a drive, a residential street, a car park or a filling station.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Penallt: the cost of fixing it

Every job is different, so no fixed price would be fair.

Whether your engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the price. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the location of the car, because an open drive is easier for a technician to get to safely than a tight space behind Coedcae School Sports Hall.

That's why each call from Penallt starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and whether it has run.

Those replies narrow the range right down to one figure.

Before a van sets off, you hear our price by phone. Then payment is on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.

## Penallt: still alongside your car?

Leaving the vehicle alone is, then, the most useful move you can do.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.

Petrol in Diesel handles the rest, in Penallt or wherever within Carmarthenshire, after you phone 0333 366 0103 saying it was AdBlue, roughly how big an amount, and if the engine ran.
