# Penny Fern: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, leave the engine off then leave your ignition off.

Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

The trouble starts once it's pulled through your lines — it will not ignite, and it will not combine with diesel.

If the engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and carefully purged where the vehicle stands in Penny Fern.

Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Penny Fern

Do:

- Pull the keys out, and so nobody switches the ignition on.

- Put the hazards on if you're at all near moving traffic.

- So you can give us which fluid it was and roughly how much, save the till receipt or the empty bottle.

- Our van locates you fastest with a postcode starting PA16 9, or simply the name of a street nearby, and so call from the car.

Not to do:

- Don't start the motor, even for a moment to shift your car.

- Many diesels run their pump the moment the ignition goes on, and so keep it off.

- Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short stretch up Maple Road.

- Beside the road, don't attempt draining it yourself.

On a forecourt in Penny Fern, whether it is the BP or another one, ask the attendants to help you push the vehicle away from the petrol pump.

Parked on your own driveway? Then it remains exactly as it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the motor.

From a separate tank it goes straight to your exhaust, treating what your engine lets out.

Nothing in a fuel pump is designed for this liquid — and none of that was meant to travel that way.

It does not combine. Once it is poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves not at all like fuel.

The intake sucks fuel from the lowest part of that tank, and that's precisely where AdBlue ends up: being heavier than diesel, it sinks.

Easiest of all: one that got AdBlue in Bow Farm overnight and hasn't been started since. The liquid sits at the base of that tank, undrawn — but it would be the first thing through once the motor runs, before any diesel at all.

It causes two kinds of damage from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that crystallises in filters and tiny channels; meanwhile, since it eats at some metals, each part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it remains in there.

Pipes holding AdBlue mean harm by morning for a vehicle sitting around Penny Fern. Only inside the tank, it stays the same.

Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and each injector as it passes; water offers no lubrication, and that is a separate form of harm.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is often more serious than petrol

A problem of thin fuel is what you end up with after filling a diesel with petrol from the Tesco.

No damage is done while it sits put, mixed into your diesel — only once the motor works on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is plainly the wrong one.

Since it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option.

It does not stay mixed, and so it cannot be thinned. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the car is in Overton or the middle of Penny Fern.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Emptying a tank is the easiest job on any fuel system, and with no start-up, the AdBlue stays in it — anywhere around Inverclyde your car sits.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Penny Fern: how it ends up there

Many vehicles put the AdBlue filler beside the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap, and after dark the two may appear identical. Nobody intends it.

Mostly it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

A couple of familiar ways cover most cases.

The top-up gets hurried outside the local primary school, after the dash lit up with a warning as the kids were dropped in.

A driver tips the bottle in outside their house, right off Pennyfern Road, as the day ends.

Otherwise, in dim light outside The Broomhill Tavern, the vehicle is topped up by a driver opening that flap the first time.

Rented cars, brand-new cars, fleet motors, or the spare car in a home with both fuels: the least familiar vehicles see it most.

Leave it switched off: that's the first response to an identical mistake, wherever in Penny Fern or the rest of Inverclyde you are.

## Penny Fern: started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then.

With any running time, it travels to the high-pressure pump and each injector, after passing through your filter and pipework.

Rough running, smoke, lost power, dashboard lights or stalling: each might show up, maybe midway across Penny Fern or returning from Rankin Park.

Once you safely can, pull over then switch everything off — without restarting to see.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

If you were on the M8, under 10 miles from Penny Fern, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

Distance counts: each mile carries the AdBlue further into the system, and so heading towards Glasgow, under 25 miles away, makes a much bigger job than crossing Penny Fern to the car park by Lady Alice Bowling Club.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Wherever the car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush once the motor has been running.

Caught quickly, it very seldom leaves long-term damage.

## Emptying AdBlue in a diesel in Penny Fern: what it takes

A road by The Mount Kirk, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt: anywhere your car has stopped around Penny Fern, we travel to it.

Three answers shape the work, and so before anything else our technicians ask what was put in, about the amount, and if the engine has turned over.

Then the tank is cleared where the car waits, and so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

Residue from AdBlue won't flush out by itself, and so the whole system gets a full flush, which counts far more here than with petrol.

Clean diesel goes in once the filter is flushed — or swapped, when it needs to be — and then your car is tested.

Not run? In that case expect roughly half an hour on site for most jobs.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

New diesel goes in to prime the system, and that's the last step.

Starting it comes next, and then you set off from where the vehicle is parked, by Drumfrochar or on a drive around Penny Fern.

It is tested on new diesel to confirm it runs smoothly before we leave.

The whole job is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a garage.

The insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours once the job is done.

Anywhere the car stands — your drive at home, a side street, a car park, a filling station — our engineers empty it on the spot, and there's no need to bring it to us; which suits Penny Fern, a residential suburb, well.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Penny Fern: the cost of fixing it

There's no honest single price, because the jobs are not the same.

Three things move the price: whether the engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the car is. That last one comes down to whether our van can reach it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight spot behind Greenock Blitz War Memorial.

With that in mind, each call from Penny Fern begins by asking the same trio — what went in, what quantity, if the engine ran — ahead of any figure.

When those are answered, a range turns into a single firm number.

Our price is quoted on the call, before anyone sets off; payment happens on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

While our engineer is on the way, dig out your insurance: many include misfuelling.
