# Pensby: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Stop reading a minute when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and call 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, done right where your car stands around Pensby, is usually what it needs if caught before the engine runs.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Many current diesels on the roads around Pensby and Thurstaston carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

The exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the fumes to clean them, from a separate tank.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Other cars put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty more have the two together behind one flap.

At the pump, the diesel side is topped up all the time.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

It is in that gap that the slip lives.

## Pensby: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Nicholls Drive before work, or in the car park outside The Shippons on the way home.

New-to-you vehicles come next, as well. Hire cars, new cars and company cars place their fillers differently, and the hand reaches for the cap used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after begun, carries on.

Whether it takes place in Poll Hill or the middle of Pensby, it's the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Look at these before pouring, at a forecourt around Pensby or a drive over in Barnston. A few seconds, that's all.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones are often blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually don't.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of vehicles have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it is if the filler is not next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Heswall, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

On the day the warning comes on — anywhere it is in Merseyside — a routine to follow.

- Stop on level, motor off, with time to spare — never hurried on the side of Holmesway.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap works — once you have located your filler and read the cap.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where both share a flap, confirm it is closed before the bottle comes up.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, and look again — making sure the diesel filler stayed closed the whole time. Only then, start the car.

Find at the second or third stage that AdBlue went in the diesel tank? That is where you stop.

Stage five stays out.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Pensby already?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with no starting the engine.

Keep your ignition off too, because on many diesels it by itself runs the pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

On a forecourt — Texaco, Sainsbury's or another — the staff will normally help roll your car away, when you ask.

Your own driveway around Pensby is where it stays.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

On the M53, under 3 miles from Pensby, that means the next junction.

Distance counts — a quick hop across Pensby is a smaller job than heading under 10 miles to Liverpool — so say about how far it went.

## When our technicians arrive around Pensby, what takes place?

Anywhere the car came to rest, be it by Ladymount Catholic Primary School, beside Pensby Community Centre or at home, the van travels to it.

Our technicians ask what got in, about how much, and if it's run, because the replies settle this work and the price.

The quote is given on the call, before any van leaves.

Your system is then rinsed thoroughly, once that tank is cleared.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

The filter flushed or, if needed, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a test of the vehicle.

After that we start it and confirm it runs smoothly before leaving.

If your engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Your insurer usually wants an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.

## For Pensby drivers, the short version

Pour nothing till you have read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same, leave the vehicle off then call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it waits, anywhere across Merseyside.
