# Pensford: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Pause here for a moment when your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Pensford.

Not happened yet? Below, the rest of the page explains the why it occurs and the ways to avoid it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Diesel goes to the motor — yet many modern diesels seen about Pensford and Whitley Batts carry another fluid too.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There's a filler on each tank.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on a lot of motors. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

At the pump, your diesel side gets filled constantly.

Far less often, the AdBlue side gets filled — normally from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

The mistake grows in that gap between them.

## Pensford: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the car, and running out means limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Wick Lane, perhaps at The Rising Sun on the way home that evening.

Then, the hand goes for the cap it knew on the old motor — since a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

It takes seconds, whether in Publow or bang in the heart of Pensford.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A couple of seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Woollard or a forecourt in Pensford.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Open the flap and look for a label — many motors mark which belongs in each inlet just there.

- The handbook says which it lives if your filler is not next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Whoever had it before will know. Check when you pick up a hire car or company car — at Keynsham's car park, perhaps — rather than once the warning comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

The day the light comes on, anywhere in Somerset, follow this routine.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Church Street.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- Both behind a single flap? Then confirm the cap on your diesel side stays shut before lifting the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? So stop right there.

Don't go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Pensford?

Don't start the motor: that is how the short order of things starts.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels as soon as the ignition is switched on — so leave it off.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

Ask the staff to help roll your car away from the petrol pump if you're at a forecourt — the Murco, the Tesco or somewhere else.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive in Pensford.

Already started? Pull over once it's sensible, then turn off.

On the M32, under 10 miles from Pensford, that means the next exit.

Distance counts — a short hop across Pensford makes a smaller job than heading under 10 miles towards Bristol — so say about how far it went.

## Our arrival around Pensford, and what takes place next

We come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Pensford Primary School, close to St Thomas a Beckets Church or on your own drive.

Our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and whether it's run, since those replies settle this work and the price.

During the phone call itself, you are told our price — before dispatch.

Then that tank is cleared and the system flushed thoroughly.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Before we leave, our engineers fire it up and check that it's running correctly.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour once we get there, as long as your engine has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are safe on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark outside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It's worth looking at your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.

The car doesn't need to shift.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street near Acker Bilk, a lay-by on the way to The Rising Sun, a driveway.

Guessing won't help behind Pensford Memorial Hall, close to a border, or somewhere awkward to describe; ring and ask.
