# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Pentre-clawdd: Why It Happens and How to Prevent It

Pause here a minute if the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, carried out right where the vehicle stands around Pentre-clawdd, is normally all it needs when found before the engine runs.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to the engine — but plenty of current diesels seen around Pentre-clawdd and Daywall hold a second fluid as well.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, where spraying treats the gas.

Each tank has one filler of its own.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the arrangement on a lot of vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Topping up your diesel side at the petrol pump goes on constantly.

The AdBlue side is filled far less often, normally from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

Mistakes happen in the gap between them.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur in Pentre-clawdd?

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a drive off Gobowen Road before work, or in the car park at Cross Foxes on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle warns you, and once it is empty, limp mode kicks in.

Next, your hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old motor — because a rental car, a new motor or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, once begun, keeps on.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Pentre-clawdd or out in Twmpath.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Be it a Pentre-clawdd forecourt or a driveway out in Gobowen, spend a couple of seconds over these before any is poured in.

- Position misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually do not.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside the fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of vehicles. Look for it.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by your diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Gobowen, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

On the day the light comes on — anywhere you are around Shropshire — a routine to follow.

- Switch off once parked — flat ground, motor stopped, and not rushed beside Five Crosses at the roadside.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- The diesel cap remains on. When both sit under a flap, make sure it is closed before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start your car: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Don't carry on to step five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Pentre-clawdd?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the engine.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch the vehicle on.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

At a forecourt — BP, Shell or any other — the staff will normally help roll your car away, if you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway in Pentre-clawdd.

Already started? Pull over when it's safe, then switch off.

On the M53, under 25 miles from Pentre-clawdd, that means the next junction.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Wrexham, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Pentre-clawdd.

## What takes place when our technicians turn up in Pentre-clawdd

Our van reaches the vehicle anywhere it stopped — your own drive, near Park Hall Farm, or by Woodside Primary School.

Those replies settle this work and the price, so our engineers ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it has run.

Nobody sets off until you have had our quote over the phone.

After that: a drain, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Filter cleaned or, if it must be, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a test of the vehicle.

Before leaving, our engineers fire it up and check that it's running properly.

If the motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to look at yours.

Quickest of all: quote a SY10 7 postcode to our van.

There's no need to shift the car.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street close to WWII Museum, a lay-by on the way to Granville Park (Oswestry Rugby Club), a driveway.

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Old Oswestry Iron Age Hill Fort.

Read the cap before you tip.
