# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Pentrepiod? Keep It Switched Off

Motor off, ignition off: that is where you start if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

Being water-based, it won't ignite and never combines with diesel; damage just starts once your pump starts pulling it.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Pentrepiod, is generally what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before your engine has run.

Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

## Pentrepiod, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do:

- Pull the keys out, and so nobody switches the ignition on.

- Near moving traffic? So put the hazards on.

- Hold on to the receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what went in and about how much.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting NP4 6, or the name of the closest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Not to do:

- No starting the motor — not briefly, not to reposition your vehicle.

- Turning your key to ignition alone starts your pump running on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.

- AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel will not thin it.

- Even a short distance down Highfield Close is too far to drive the vehicle.

- By the road, do not try emptying it yourself.

On a forecourt around Pentrepiod, whether it is the Texaco or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll the car clear of the petrol pump.

On your own driveway, don't touch it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your engine.

Kept in a dedicated tank, it is injected into the exhaust to treat the gases.

A fuel pump isn't made to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

It doesn't combine. After it's poured into the tank, AdBlue behaves not at all like fuel.

It sinks, since it's heavier than diesel, and pools low where the intake draws its fuel from.

Simplest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Charlesville last night and hasn't turned since. The liquid sits at the foot of the tank, untouched — but it would be the first thing through if your engine starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

After it's drawn in, the damage comes in two forms.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps labouring on the components it gets to for as long as it remains there.

Pipes holding AdBlue mean damage by morning for a vehicle sitting around Pentrepiod. Just in the tank, it stays stable.

Water protects nothing. The injection pump and every injector depend on diesel flowing past them, so the water part damages them in its own right.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's regularly worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the another forecourt nearby and you have an issue of thin fuel.

It mixes with the diesel, and while it's inside your tank it causes no harm; the harm comes from running your motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether.

Not burning, it cannot just be run through.

It doesn't stay mixed, and so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the car is in Pontnewynydd or the middle of Pentrepiod.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Wherever across Torfaen the vehicle has stopped, an unstarted motor leaves the AdBlue still inside the reservoir: the easiest part of a fuel system to clear.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Pentrepiod: how it ends up there

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, now and then behind a single flap — can look the same. No one means it; plenty of designs allow it.

Most of the time it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the forecourt.

The ways it happens are few and familiar.

The refill gets rushed outside the local primary school, after the dash lit up with a warning as the kids were taken in.

In the evening, a container goes in on a driveway near Gypsy Lane.

Or a driver new to that flap refills your car in dim light, parked in the car park by The Bridgeend Inn.

The least familiar cars get it most — hire cars, brand-new cars, fleet ones, and the spare car of a family with one of each fuels.

Anywhere around Torfaen, Pentrepiod as well, the mistake does not change, and nor does the first response: leave it off.

## Already started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Pentrepiod?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank.

The fuel filter and lines have had it pulled through, and any running time carries it on to the injection pump and every injector.

Maybe coming back from Pontnewynydd Cricket Club, or part way across Pentrepiod, the engine may run rough, smoke, drop pace, flash the dash or stall.

No starting it again to test: stop when safe, then turn it off.

Each start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the M4, under 10 miles from Pentrepiod, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

Mileage matters: each mile carries the AdBlue further into your system, so driving towards Newport, under 10 miles away, gives a much bigger job than hopping across Pentrepiod to the car park by Ebenezer Chapel.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Once the engine has been run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has stopped.

Spotted soon, it very rarely leaves permanent damage.

## Emptying AdBlue in a diesel in Pentrepiod: what it takes

Anywhere it has stopped in Pentrepiod — a filling station, a lay-by, a driveway, a street by Ebenezer Centre — our van comes to the vehicle.

What got in, about how much, plus if the engine has been run: our technicians check before all else, because those shape the work.

Then the tank is drained where the vehicle stands, and so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

The fuel system is flushed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

After that, your filter: cleaned, or changed when it must be. After that clean diesel, then a test of your vehicle.

About half an hour on site is usual for most jobs where your engine hasn't run.

Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Fresh diesel goes in to prime your system, and that is the last step.

Starting the car comes next, and then you drive off from where the vehicle is parked, by Pontypool and New Inn or on a drive in Pentrepiod.

The check before our engineers head off is that it runs properly on clean diesel.

No garage is needed at any point, with the whole job done on the spot.

Your insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

## Pentrepiod: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Each job differs, and so not one single price is fair.

The cost changes first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it rests on where the vehicle is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Merchants Hill Baptist Church.

With that in mind, every enquiry from Pentrepiod opens by asking the same trio — which fluid went in, what quantity, whether it ran — before a quote.

The replies turn a range into a straight price.

Before a van sets off, you are told the price by phone. And payment is on the day, card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.
