# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Petersfinger

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep the motor off — and the ignition as well.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor blends, and nothing starts until the motor pulls it round.

In Petersfinger, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before your motor runs usually comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, right where the vehicle is.

Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Petersfinger: the first few minutes

To do:

- So no one can switch your ignition on, pull your keys out.

- Near moving traffic? So put your hazards on.

- Which fluid, and roughly how much quantity? Save the bottle or the receipt, and we can see.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting SP5 3, or the name of the closest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

- Not even briefly, and not to roll your vehicle: your motor stays off.

- Don't switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Pouring in extra diesel does not work: AdBlue settles out instead of thinning.

- Even a short distance along Petersfinger Road is too far to drive it.

- Draining that tank yourself beside the road isn't one to try.

At a forecourt around Petersfinger, whether it's the Tesco or another one, ask the attendants to help you push the vehicle clear of the pump.

Parked on your own driveway? Then it remains just as it is.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the motor.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it.

No part in a fuel pump is designed for this liquid — and no part of it was meant to travel that way.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once poured in, won't. Its behaviour is nothing like diesel's.

The pickup takes fuel from the deepest part of that tank, and that is precisely where AdBlue settles: being heavier than diesel, it sinks.

The first thing your fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Wyndham Park last night, and has not been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

It causes two kinds of harm from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps running on the parts it reaches for as long as it stays there.

Pipes carrying AdBlue spell damage overnight for a car sitting around Petersfinger. Just in that tank, it stays the same.

And there's the water: it offers no lubrication to the components that rely on it the most — the injection pump and each injector.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it is often worse than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol in error over at the Esso, and the problem is diluted fuel.

It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it is inside the tank it does no damage; the harm comes from running your motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

Not burning, it can't simply be run through.

It does not stay mixed, so it cannot be thinned. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the car is in Britford or the middle of Petersfinger.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Emptying a tank is the easiest job on a fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue remains in it — wherever across Wiltshire the car has stopped.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Petersfinger

Plenty of vehicles put the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel one, occasionally under one flap, and after dark the two can appear the same. No one means it.

A bottle picked up while heading home and poured in outside the house, rather than at the forecourt, is the usual route.

It tends to happen in a couple of familiar ways.

Hurrying, outside St Martin's CofE Primary School, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, a parent refills the vehicle.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Bourne Way.

Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap refills the car in dim light, stopped in the car park by The Railway Inn/ The Dust Hole.

The least familiar cars get it the most — rentals, new cars, company ones, and the spare vehicle of a home with both fuels.

Wherever in Wiltshire, Petersfinger as well, the slip doesn't change, and neither does the first step: leave it off.

## Started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Petersfinger?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then.

With any running, it travels to the injection pump and every injector, after passing via your filter and pipework.

Maybe returning from Whitebridge Park/play area, or part way across Petersfinger, the motor may go lumpy, smoke, drop power, light up your dash or cut out.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

Leave the M27, under 15 miles from Petersfinger, by the first junction and stop somewhere safe, not carrying on.

How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Petersfinger to the car park by Dunelm Home Furnishings is a very different job from a run towards Salisbury, under 3 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with each mile.

Tell us about how far it had come.

Our technicians do all of the rinsing where your car has come to a stop, and once your engine has run there is more of it.

Long-term damage is very uncommon when it's noticed quickly.

## Petersfinger: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

We come to the car, wherever it has stopped in Petersfinger: a side street close to St Peter, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Before anything else we ask what got in, about how much, and if the engine has run, because those answers determine the work.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave as one after that tank is drained, right there.

Your system is flushed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

A test of your vehicle follows last, once fresh diesel is added and the filter gets cleaned or, where needed, replaced.

Engine not run? In that case count on about half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Bleeding the system with clean diesel comes at the end.

At that point our technicians start the engine and you drive off, whether from a parking space outside Salisbury or a driveway around Petersfinger.

Before leaving, our technicians make sure it's running correctly with clean diesel in.

No garage is needed at any stage, with the entire job done on the spot.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers want.

## AdBlue drains in Petersfinger and across Wiltshire

AdBlue call-outs in Petersfinger go to vans that cover the places around it — Milford, The Friary plus Laverstock — and much of Wiltshire further out, across SP postcodes.

Near a boundary, or anywhere awkward to pin down? Asking is better than guessing, so phone.

A van that comes to you suits Petersfinger, a residential suburb: there's no need to take the vehicle to us, since we drain it there, in a drive, a residential street, a parking area or a filling station.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Petersfinger

Every job is different, so no fixed price would be honest.

The cost changes first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that went in. After that it turns on where the vehicle is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Sarum St Martin.

Ahead of any quote, not after, every enquiry from Petersfinger begins with three checks: the fuel, the quantity, and whether it ran.

The answers turn a range into a straight quote.

Quoted by phone before the van sets out, it is paid for that day — card or phone, no deposit.

Check your insurance whilst we are on the way: plenty carry misfuelling cover.

## In Petersfinger and still next to the vehicle?

Right now, the most helpful thing to do with your vehicle is to not touch it.

Keys out; motor and ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us it's AdBlue, roughly how much, and whether it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Petersfinger or anywhere in Wiltshire.
