# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Picket Piece: How It Occurs and How to Stop It

Pause reading a minute when your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a thorough flush, done right where your vehicle sits in Picket Piece, is usually all it takes when found before the engine runs.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the rest of the page explains the why it takes place and the how to prevent it for good.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads about Picket Piece and Little London carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, where spraying treats the fumes.

Each tank has its own filler.

Other cars keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot more place both side by side under one flap.

Topping up the diesel side at the pump happens all the time.

The AdBlue side is filled far less regularly, normally from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank happen in Picket Piece?

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Ox Drove Rise before work, or in the car park outside Wyke Down on the way home.

The old car's filler is where the hand reaches — yet a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That is the second factor: a strange vehicle.

Lastly, the spout goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in just as easily, and after the tip starts, no part halts it.

Andover Down or the middle of Picket Piece: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Whether a Picket Piece forecourt or a drive over in Enham Alamein, take a couple of seconds on these before any goes in.

- Check the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally aren't.

- Many cars give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Look inside the fuel flap: plenty of motors carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- Cannot see it next to the diesel filler? In that case check below the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook says which.

- The previous driver will know. Check when you collect a hire car or company car — at Andover's car park, say — rather than when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

For the day the light comes on — anywhere it is in Hampshire — a simple routine to follow.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Walworth Road.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap works — after you've located your filler and read it.

- The diesel cap stays on. When the two share a flap, make sure it's shut before the bottle comes up.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, and look once more — confirm your diesel cap remained shut throughout. Only then, start your car.

Find at step two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there.

Don't go on to step five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Picket Piece?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your engine.

Don't switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

Ask the attendants to help roll your car clear of the pump if you are at a forecourt — the Tesco, the BP or somewhere else.

Your own driveway in Picket Piece is the place it stays.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Come off the M3 — under 10 miles out of Picket Piece — at the first junction.

A short hop across Picket Piece is a smaller job than a run towards Winchester, under 15 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Picket Piece: what takes place when we get there

Our van reaches the vehicle wherever it stopped — your own driveway, near National Bird Watch, or outside Pilgrims' Cross CofE Aided Primary School.

Which liquid went in, the quantity, and if it ran: our technicians ask since the replies decide both work and price.

No one heads out until you have had the price by phone.

Your system is then flushed thoroughly, after your tank is cleared.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of that washes out unaided. That is why it matters more.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Your engine is started next and tested to be sure it runs properly, all before we head off.

If your engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

While we travel, take a look at your policy; plenty include cover for misfuelling.

The vehicle stays put.

We drain it where it is — a side street close to Roman Building, a lay-by on the way to Pepper Hill Firs, a driveway.

Ring and ask instead of assuming if you're near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Picket Piece Village Hall.

## In short, for Picket Piece motorists

Read the cap before you pour.

Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, anywhere in Hampshire, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same — and so leave it off and call 0333 366 0103.
