# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Pike Hill: How It Happens and How to Stop It

Stop reading a minute when your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if the engine hasn't run, it is drained and fully rinsed where the vehicle is in Pike Hill.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Plenty of newer diesels around Worsthorne, as well as Pike Hill, run on two fluids; your engine takes only your diesel.

Your exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the fumes to fresh it, from its own tank.

There is a filler on each tank.

Many of cars share a single flap for the two, whereas some put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in on each filling station call-out, again and again.

The AdBlue side is filled far less commonly, normally from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

It is in the gap that the mistake happens.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur around Pike Hill?

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

On a drive off Thornton Road before work, or in the car park at The Thornton heading home: that's where the rushed top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car tells you, and once it is empty, limp mode kicks in.

Next, the hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old vehicle — since a rental car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after started, keeps on.

Whether it takes place in Brunshaw or the middle of Pike Hill, it is the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A few seconds is all these take — so check them before you pour anything, on a drive in Heasandford or a forecourt around Pike Hill.

- Read the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally aren't.

- Plenty of motors give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler is if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Burnley Central.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

When the light comes on, wherever in Lancashire, follow this routine.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Brownside Road.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, perhaps, yet it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.

- Finish once that tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; before that, tip gently through its built-in spout.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to stage five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Pike Hill?

Do not start the motor: that is where the short order of things begins.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the vehicle on.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it is the Shell or the Tesco, ask the attendants to help push your car clear of the petrol pump.

If you're on your own driveway in Pike Hill, leave it where it stands.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

On the M65, under 3 miles from Pike Hill, that means the next junction.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Bradford, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Pike Hill.

## When we turn up in Pike Hill, what happens?

Our engineers come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Burnley Brunshaw Primary School, near Brunshaw Methodist Church or on your own driveway.

Which liquid went in, the quantity, and if it ran: we ask because those answers set the work and price.

The quote is given on the call, before any van leaves.

After that: a drain, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and none of it washes away unaided. That is why it matters more.

Filter cleaned or, where it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; then a test of the car.

Before we go, our technicians start the car and check that it is running correctly.

Unrun vehicles mostly need a half-hour job from arrival. The kit is safe on a busy forecourt, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

The insurer will ask for the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours once this job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

While we travel, take a look at your policy; many include cover for misfuelling.

## AdBlue drains round Pike Hill, and Lancashire beyond

Pike Hill is a residential suburb, and the vans that cover it also work the places around it, Brownside and Fulledge among them, across the BB postcode area.

Give a postcode that starts BB10 3, and the van gets there quickest.

No need to shift the vehicle.

Anywhere it sits — beside Kingdom Hall of Jehova's Witnesses, in a lay-by en route to Rowley, at home — that's where it gets cleared.

Awkward to pin down, like the back of Burnley FC Elite Training Centre? Close to a county line? Asking beats guessing, so phone.

## The short version for Pike Hill people

Before you pour, read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere across Lancashire, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway — so leave the vehicle off and ring 0333 366 0103.
