# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Pilford: Why It Happens

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and the ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when the motor has not turned, it is drained and fully purged where the car is around Pilford.

Reading before the event? In that case what follows explains how it happens and what to stop it happening at all.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Many current diesels on the roads round Pilford and Colehill carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, and there a spray treats the fumes.

Each tank has its own filler.

Plenty of cars have a single flap for the two, while some move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time.

Much less frequently, the AdBlue side gets topped up — mostly from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur around Pilford?

Carelessness rarely explains it. What does is three things coming up at once.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the car, and letting it run dry means limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Wood View, perhaps at Barley Mow on the way home after work.

The old car's filler is where the hand goes — yet a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That is a second thing: a strange motor.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

It takes a few seconds, be it in Broom Hill or bang in the heart of Pilford.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Whether a Pilford forecourt or a drive out in White Moor, take a few seconds on these before anything goes in.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Go by the cap, not its position.

- Many motors fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler sits if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Whoever had it before knows. Ask when you pick up a rental or fleet car — at Branksome's car park, perhaps — rather than once the light appears.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

The day the light comes on, anywhere in Dorset, use this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Pilford Heath Road, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park and switch off properly.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, yes, but it does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where the two share a flap, confirm it is shut before the bottle comes up.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before starting your car, shut the cap and check a second time that the diesel cap never opened off.

Find at step two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? So stop just there.

Don't carry on to stage five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Pilford?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your motor.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels the moment the ignition goes on — and so leave it off.

Diluting it with extra diesel won't work, because AdBlue settles to the base instead of mixing — and that's where the fuel is pulled from.

On a forecourt — Shell, BP or any other — the attendants will normally help push the vehicle away, when you ask.

If you are on your own drive around Pilford, leave it where it sits.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Come off the M27 — under 25 miles out of Pilford — at the next exit.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Salisbury, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Pilford.

## When our technicians turn up in Pilford, what takes place?

By Colehill First School, close to Colehill Library or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our technicians come to it.

Those replies determine the work and the price, so our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it's run.

You hear that price by phone, before anybody heads out.

Emptying your tank comes next, then a thorough flush of the fuel system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and neither washes away unaided. That is why it matters more.

Filter cleaned or, if needed, swapped; fresh diesel in; and then a test of your car.

Before leaving, we start it and confirm that it's running properly.

With pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine has not run need about half an hour once our technicians are there.

The insurer usually wants an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

It's worth checking your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.

## AdBlue drains around Pilford, and Dorset beyond

Pilford is a residential suburb, and the teams that cover it also work the places around it, Merry Field Hill and Gods Blessing Green among them, across the BH postcode area.

Give a postcode beginning BH21 7, and the van arrives quickest.

The car doesn't need to move.

We drain it where it is — a side street close to Colehill Memorial Hall, a lay-by on the way to Cannon Hill Plantation, a drive.

Awkward to pin down, like the back of St Michael and All Angels Church? Close to a border? Checking beats guessing, and so phone.

## Pilford drivers: the short version

Read the cap before you tip.

Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere in Dorset, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless — so leave the car off and ring 0333 366 0103.
