# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Pilgrims Rest: Why It Happens and How to Avoid It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and your ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Pilgrims Rest.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of current diesels on the roads round Pilgrims Rest and Gibraltar carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Your exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the fumes to clean them, from its own tank.

There is a filler for each tank.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in on every filling station call-out, week in, week out.

Far less regularly, the AdBlue side gets topped up — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank happens around Pilgrims Rest

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the car, and letting it run dry leads to limp mode — so a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Henman Close, perhaps at The Half Moon on the way home after work.

Unfamiliar vehicles are second, too. Rentals, new vehicles and company cars place their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

Lastly, the bottle fits: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in just as easily, and once the tip starts, nothing stops it.

It takes seconds, be it out in Kempston Church End or right in the centre of Pilgrims Rest.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all these take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a drive in Keeley Green or a forecourt in Pilgrims Rest.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue caps are often blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally don't.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Check for it.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler sits if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Kempston Hardwick, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

The day the light comes on, wherever in Bedfordshire, use this routine.

- Turn off once parked — level ground, motor stopped, and not in a rush beside Chibnall Close on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where both sit under a flap, make sure it is shut before the bottle comes up.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Don't go on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Pilgrims Rest already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the engine.

On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the vehicle on.

Topping up with diesel will not thin it: instead, AdBlue drops to the base of that tank, right where fuel is taken from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it's the BP or the Shell, ask the staff to help roll the vehicle away from the pump.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive around Pilgrims Rest.

Already run? Pull over when it's sensible, then switch off.

On the M1, under 10 miles from Pilgrims Rest, that means the next junction.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Milton Keynes, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Pilgrims Rest.

## What happens when our technicians arrive around Pilgrims Rest

Our van comes to the car anywhere it has come to rest — your own drive, near The Kempston Centre, or by Kempston Rural Primary School.

The answers settle this work and our price, and so our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it has run.

You get that price by phone, before anyone heads out.

Next: draining, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Filter flushed or, where it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; then a test of the vehicle.

Your engine is fired up next and checked to make sure it runs smoothly, all before our technicians go.

Using pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the engine hasn't run take roughly half an hour after our engineers are there.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents your insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

It is worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.
