# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Pill

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, the ignition stays off and so does the engine.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that's AdBlue.

Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and no harm starts till your motor sucks it round.

Caught before the motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Pill.

No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Pill: the first few minutes

Things to do:

- So no one can switch the ignition on, take your keys away.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.

- Hold on to the till receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what got in and roughly how much.

- Ring right where you are. Quote a SA73 2 postcode or the nearest street sign, and no one has to search for you.

Do not:

- Not even for a second, and not to roll your vehicle: the motor stays off.

- Do not switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Adding more diesel does not work: AdBlue separates out rather than blending.

- Even a short stretch along Yorke Close is too far to drive the vehicle.

- No draining it yourself, at all, on the verge.

Get the attendants to help you move the vehicle away from the island if you are at a forecourt in Pill, whether it is the the nearest petrol station or elsewhere.

Stopped on your own driveway? Then it remains exactly where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the motor.

From a dedicated reservoir it goes directly to the exhaust, cleaning what your motor lets out.

Nothing in a fuel pump is made for this fluid — and no part of that was intended to travel that way.

It doesn't combine. Once it's poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts nothing like fuel.

It drops, because it is denser than diesel, and settles down where the pickup takes its supply from.

The first thing the system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Liddeston last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

It does two kinds of damage from there.

It eats at some metals used in fuel components, working on whatever it touches until it is removed completely. And once the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that block filters and settle in narrow channels.

Pipes holding AdBlue mean damage by morning for a vehicle sitting around Pill. Only in the tank, it stays stable.

Diesel protects the high-pressure pump and each injector as it flows; water gives none of that, and that is a second form of damage.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more major than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Tesco's forecourt leaves your fuel thin — that is the whole fault.

It mixes with your diesel, and while it is inside that tank it does no damage; the harm comes from running your engine on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally wrong liquid.

It can't simply be run through, because it doesn't burn.

It doesn't stay mixed, and so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether your car is in Steynton or the middle of Pill.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol.

Not run? Then the AdBlue sits just in that tank, the easiest section of the whole system to empty, anywhere the car has come to rest across Pembrokeshire.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Pill?

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors rests right next to the diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Usually it is not the filling station: someone buys a bottle driving home and tips it in outside the house.

It tends to occur in a couple of familiar ways.

Rushing, outside the local primary school, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, someone tops up the car.

In the evening, a container goes in on a driveway near Coombs Drive.

Else, in dim light by Sir Charles Whetham, your vehicle gets topped up by a driver opening that flap for the first time.

Rented cars, brand-new vehicles, company motors, or the spare car in a family with one of each: the least familiar vehicles see it most.

Wherever you're around Pill or the rest of Pembrokeshire, it is the same error and the same first answer: leave it off.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Pill?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in your tank.

It has been sucked through the fuel filter and your lines, and if the engine ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure pump and your injectors.

Watch for rough running, smoke, falling power, lights on the dash, or a stall — coming back from Memorial Gardens, say, or midway across Pill.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the vehicle to check.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

Leave the M4, under 50 miles from Pill, at the first junction and park somewhere safe, rather than carrying on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Pill to the car park by St Katharine & St Peter is a very different job from a run towards St Davids, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

There's more to flush once the motor has been started, and our engineers do all of it where your car has stopped.

Permanent damage is very uncommon when it's spotted quickly.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Pill?

A road beside Milford Haven Town Hall, a drive, a layby or a forecourt: wherever your car has come to rest around Pill, we come to it.

The job rests on three replies, and we get first — which fluid was put in, the quantity, and whether your motor has run.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave together after your tank is drained, on the spot.

With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing matters: the whole system is flushed right through because what remains will not wash out unaided.

A test of the car follows last, after fresh diesel is added and the filter is flushed or, if necessary, swapped.

About half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs where your motor hasn't run.

Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Fresh diesel goes in to prime your system, and that is the last step.

At that point we start the car and you head off, whether from a parking bay by Milford Haven or a driveway in Pill.

It's checked on fresh diesel to confirm it runs properly before we go.

Because the job is done in its entirety where your car is, a garage never comes into it.

Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

## About Pill

Pill is a coastal suburban area in Pembrokeshire, situated near Milford Haven and the historic town of St Davids. Pill sits at a relatively low elevation of around 40 metres, overlooking the sea. Pill is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock, reflecting its development as a residential area. Pill is home to a population of approximately 4235 people, with nearby amenities in Milford Haven and St Davids.

## AdBlue drains across Pembrokeshire, Pill included

Milford Haven, Priory and Hakin are among the towns around Pill that the same teams serve, together with much of Pembrokeshire beyond, over the SA postcode area.

Phone and ask rather than guess when you are close to a county line, or anywhere awkward to explain.

Wherever your vehicle sits — your drive at home, a residential street, a parking area, a forecourt — we empty it on the spot, and there's no need to take it to us; which suits Pill, a residential suburb, well.

## Pill: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Not one flat price could be fair, since each job differs.

The cost changes first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that was put in. After that it rests on where the vehicle is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Hamad Bin Khalifa Islamic Centre.

That is why every call from Pill starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and whether it's run.

Their replies narrow the range down to one number.

The price is given during the call, before a van leaves; settling up happens on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover comes with plenty of insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.

## Alongside the car around Pill, right now?

Then, the most helpful thing to do with the vehicle is to not touch it.

Engine off, keys out, ignition off.

Ring 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, the amount, and whether it ran is everything our engineers need. Petrol in Diesel handles the rest throughout Pembrokeshire, Pill included.
