# Pinhoe: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, keep your motor off and leave the ignition off.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

The harm starts once it is pulled through the lines — it will not burn, and it won't combine with diesel.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Pinhoe, is usually all AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before your motor has been run.

Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Pinhoe, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do these:

- So nobody can switch the ignition on, pull your keys out.

- Put your hazards on if you're at all near moving traffic.

- Which product, and roughly what volume? Hang on to the bottle or the till receipt, and our technicians can see.

- Call right where you are. Say a EX4 8 postcode or the nearest street name, and nobody has to search for you.

Never:

- No starting your motor — not for a second, not to shift your vehicle.

- Many diesels power their pump the instant your ignition goes on, and so leave it off.

- No extra fuel added. The AdBlue will not blend, and so it's pointless.

- Don't drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short stretch along Bradfield Road.

- Do not try to drain the vehicle yourself by the kerbside.

The staff on duty at any Pinhoe filling station — the Murco among them — will normally lend a hand pushing it aside if you ask.

On your own driveway, don't touch it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the motor.

Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it's sprayed into your exhaust, and there it treats the gas.

Nothing inside an injection pump is designed for this fluid — and none of it was intended to go that way.

Tipped in with the diesel, it stays apart rather than mixing — quite unlike fuel.

Heavier than diesel, it drops and pools below it — the same place the pickup draws from.

Easiest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Polsloe Bridge overnight and has not turned since. The AdBlue sits at the foot of the tank, undrawn — but it will be the first thing through if your motor runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

It does two kinds of damage from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps working on the components it hits for as long as it stays there.

Where the AdBlue has reached the lines, leaving it overnight around Pinhoe makes things worse. Inside the tank alone, waiting costs nothing.

The water in it causes damage of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more significant than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Sainsbury's and you have a fault of thin fuel.

No harm comes while it sits unused, blended into the diesel — only when your engine works on it.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally wrong liquid.

Since it doesn't burn, running it through isn't an option.

Nor can it be thinned, since it separates again — and the following fill won't clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters for more here, and turning the key "to see", in the heart of Pinhoe or out in Poltimore, costs more than nearly any other error.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol.

Emptying a tank is the easiest job on any fuel system, and with no start-up, the AdBlue stays in it — wherever around Devon the car has stopped.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Pinhoe

After dark, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, occasionally under one flap — may look the same. Nobody means it; many layouts allow it.

It mostly happens at home, from a bottle bought en route home, rather than at the filling station.

A few familiar ways cover the majority of them.

The refill is rushed outside Pinhoe Church of England Primary School & Nursery, after the dash lit up with a warning while the children were taken in.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Puckridge Road.

One more version: darkness, the car park by Heart Of Oak, and someone opening that flap for the first time.

The least familiar cars see it the most — hire cars, new cars, fleet cars, and the spare motor in a home with both fuel types.

Wherever you are around Pinhoe or the rest of Devon, it's the same error and the same first answer: leave it off.

## Pinhoe: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Your filter and lines have had it sucked along, and any running takes it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Lumpy running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard warnings or stalling: any might appear, perhaps midway across Pinhoe or returning from Library Fields.

Stop when it is safe. Turn off. Leave the vehicle off rather than testing it again.

Every start pulls more of that through.

Pinhoe sits under a mile from the M5; if you were on it, exit by the first junction and pull up safely instead of carrying on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Pinhoe to the car park by America Hall is a very different job from a run towards Exeter, under 3 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with each mile.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

There is more to flush once your engine has been started, and our engineers do all of it where the vehicle has stopped.

When it is caught early, long-term damage is very rare.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Pinhoe?

A street beside Pinhoe Library, a drive, a layby or a filling station: anywhere the car has come to rest around Pinhoe, our technicians come to it.

Three replies decide the job, and so before anything else our engineers ask which fluid went in, roughly what quantity, and if the engine has turned over.

Then that tank is emptied where your car waits, so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

Residue from AdBlue will not wash away by itself, so the whole system gets a careful flush, which counts far more with urea than for petrol.

After that, the fuel filter: cleaned, or changed if it must be. After that clean diesel, and then a test of your vehicle.

If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

Priming the fuel system with new diesel comes at the end.

Firing it up comes next, and then you set off from where the vehicle is parked, by the nearest station or on a drive around Pinhoe.

The check before we leave is that it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

The entire job is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop.

At the end, you are given paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

## About Pinhoe, briefly

Pinhoe is a suburban area located on the outskirts of Exeter in Devon, sitting near the River Exe at an elevation of 51 metres. Pinhoe is characterized by its semi-detached housing and is situated close to nearby places such as Monkerton, Whipton, and West Clyst. Pinhoe has a population of approximately 4051 residents and is just 2.7 miles from Exeter city centre. Pinhoe is also relatively distant from London, at 154.6 miles away.

## Pinhoe and Devon: AdBlue drains across the area

AdBlue call-outs in Pinhoe are passed to vans that serve the places near it — Monkerton, Whipton plus West Clyst — and much of Devon beyond, across EX postcodes.

Phone and check instead of guessing if you are by a border, or anywhere awkward to explain.

Pinhoe is a residential suburb, and a mobile drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our technicians drain it where it stands, and so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## Pinhoe: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

There is no honest single price, since the jobs are not the same.

The price changes first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it rests on where the car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Jubilee Club.

That is why each call from Pinhoe starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and if it has run.

Once they are known, a range becomes a single firm figure.

Quoted by phone before the engineer heads out, the job is settled that day — card or phone, no deposit.

Look at your policy while we're on the way: many include misfuelling cover.

## In Pinhoe and still next to your car?

Leaving the vehicle alone is, right now, the most useful thing open to you.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us it is AdBlue, roughly how much, and whether it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Pinhoe or anywhere across Devon.
