# Pirton: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Pause reading for a moment if your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your engine runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Pirton.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Many current diesels on the roads about Pirton and Westmill carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there spraying treats the gas.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Some vehicles keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty more place the two together behind one flap.

Topping up the diesel side at the pump happens constantly.

Rarely filled, AdBlue normally goes in out of a bottle, tipped by a driver who must stop and think which cap to use.

It's in the gap that the mistake lives.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place around Pirton

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Colemans Close before work, or in the car park outside The Fox on the way home.

Then the car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Nothing stops the pour after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It's seconds, be it out in Burge End or right in the centre of Pirton.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Snailswell or a forecourt around Pirton.

- Check the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue ones are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally are not.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.

- Cannot see it next to your diesel filler? In that case look beneath the bonnet or inside the boot — the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Hitchin.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

On the day the light comes on — wherever it is across Hertfordshire — a routine to use.

- Pull in somewhere level, motor off, with time in hand — never hurried on the side of Crabtree Lane.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- The two behind a single flap? So confirm the lid on your diesel filler is still shut before raising the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the vehicle, close the cap and look again that the diesel cap never came off.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Don't go on to step five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Pirton?

The short order of things, beginning with no starting your motor.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch the vehicle on.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

At a forecourt — Power, F C Dawes & Son or another — the attendants will usually help push your car away, when you ask.

Your own drive around Pirton is where it stays.

When your motor has run by now, pull over safely then turn the car off.

Leave the A1(M) — under 10 miles out of Pirton — at the first exit.

A short hop across Pirton is a smaller job than a run towards St Albans, under 25 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What occurs when our engineers turn up in Pirton

Outside Pirton School, close to Pirton Village Hall or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it has run, since those answers settle this work and our price.

No one heads out before you've had our quote by phone.

Then that tank is emptied and the system cleaned thoroughly.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

After that our engineers start the engine and check it runs smoothly before we go.

If the engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Nothing in advance; you settle up on the day. At the end, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

Before we get there, have a look at your policy; many carry cover for misfuelling.

## AdBlue drains in Pirton and across Hertfordshire

Pirton is a rural village, and the teams that cover it also work the towns around it, Holwell and Apsley End among them, across the SG postcode area.

A postcode starting SG5 3 gets the van to you fastest.

Shifting your car isn't necessary.

We drain it where it is — a side street close to St Mary's Church, a lay-by on the way to Great Green, a drive.

Guessing won't help behind Pirton Methodist Church, on a boundary, or anywhere hard to pin down; ring and check.

## The short version for Pirton motorists

Pour nothing till you've read the cap.

AdBlue in the diesel tank regardless? Leave the vehicle switched off and ring 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, throughout Hertfordshire.
