# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Pocket? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then keep your engine off — and the ignition too.

Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue.

Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and no harm starts till the engine sucks it through.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Pocket, is generally what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before the engine has been run.

Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Pocket

To do:

- So no one can turn the ignition on, take your keys away.

- If you are at all near moving traffic, put your hazards on.

- The empty bottle or the till receipt tells us the fluid and the amount, and so do not bin it away.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting BL3 5, or the name of the nearest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Don't:

- Shifting your car even a short way is no reason to fire up your motor.

- Turning the key to ignition by itself sets your pump going on many diesels. Avoid it.

- Pouring in more diesel doesn't work: AdBlue separates out rather than blending.

- Don't drive it anywhere, not even a short way up Stanmore Drive.

- No emptying it yourself, at all, on the roadside.

Rolling the vehicle off the island is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Pocket forecourt you are on, the Esso included.

Stopped on your own drive? Then it remains just where it is.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your motor.

Stored in a separate tank, it is injected into the exhaust stream to treat the fumes.

Not one side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and a pump cannot take urea.

Poured in with your diesel, it keeps separate rather than mixing — entirely different from fuel.

The pickup sucks fuel from the deepest part of that tank, and that's precisely where AdBlue ends up: being denser than diesel, it sinks.

The first thing your fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Daubhill last night, and has not been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

After it's sucked in, the damage takes two forms.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps working on the parts it gets to for as long as it stays there.

Pipes carrying AdBlue mean damage overnight for a vehicle parked in Pocket. Only in the tank, it stays stable.

And there's the water: it offers no protection to the components that rely on it the most — the injection pump and every injector.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger fault?

Put petrol in a diesel at the Morrisons and you have a problem of thin fuel.

Blended through the diesel and left unused, it's harmless at that stage; using the engine does the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether.

It cannot just be run through, since it doesn't burn.

Crystals and corrosion stay after the next fill, and AdBlue splits back out of your diesel, so watering it won't work. Hence the flush counts so much, and turning your key "to see" does more harm here than nearly any other mistake — in Lever Edge or the centre of Pocket equally.

As with petrol, there's good news.

Never run? Then the AdBlue waits just inside that tank, the easiest bit of the entire system to empty, anywhere your vehicle has come to rest across Greater Manchester.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Pocket?

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors waits right next to the diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

It mostly occurs outside the house, from a container grabbed on the journey home, rather than at the forecourt.

A couple of familiar ways account for the majority of them.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside St Ethelbert's Roman Catholic Primary School, a Voluntary Academy the top-up is hurried.

A driver pours the bottle in at home, just off Alice Street, as the day ends.

Or your car is topped up in the car park outside Gilnow Arms, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

It takes place most in the vehicles motorists know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

An identical mistake, an identical first step — keep it off — wherever you are in Pocket or the rest of Greater Manchester.

## Started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Pocket?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Through the fuel filter, along the lines, and — given any running time — into the injection pump and each injector: that is how far it travels.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard warnings or stalling: each might appear, maybe part way across Pocket or returning from Haslam Park.

No restarting to test: pull over once safe, then turn everything off.

Each start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the M61, under 3 miles from Pocket, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

Each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper into the system. That's why a hop across Pocket to park near The Willows Centre and a drive of under 10 miles for Salford are very separate jobs.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the engine has run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the car has ended up.

Noticed quickly, it very seldom leaves long-term damage.

## What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves in Pocket

The car remains where it is, whether that's a road beside St Ethelbert's R.C. Church, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt in Pocket, and our van comes to it.

What went in, roughly how much, plus whether the motor has been run: we ask before all else, since those shape the work.

On the spot, your tank is then emptied, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea come out at once.

With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing matters: the whole system is cleaned right through since what remains will not flush away by itself.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Not run? In that case count on about half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a busy filling station is no issue, and it is quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

The final step is to prime your system on new diesel.

Whether it's a parking space by Bolton or a drive in Pocket, that is where our engineers start it and you set off.

It's checked on new diesel to confirm it runs properly before our technicians leave.

Because the job is done in its entirety where your car is, a workshop never comes into it.

Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both at the end.

Pocket is located near several other suburban areas, including Willows, Gilnow, and Deane, and is approximately 8.9 miles from the city of Salford. Pocket has a population of around 13075 residents and is part of the wider urban landscape of the North West region. Pocket is also relatively distant from London, being around 172.7 miles away.

## AdBlue drains around Pocket and across Greater Manchester

The teams that answer AdBlue call-outs around Pocket also cover the places about it, Willows, Gilnow and Deane among them, and most of Greater Manchester beyond, across the BL postcode area.

Close to a boundary, or somewhere tricky to explain? Checking beats assuming, so phone.

No towing is needed. In Pocket, a residential suburb, a van that comes to you fits: your car is drained on the spot, whether on a drive, a residential street, a parking area or a filling station.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Pocket

Because each callouts vary, a flat figure would not be fair.

The cost changes first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it turns on where your car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Melbourne Road Methodist Church.

That's why each call from Pocket starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and whether it has run.

Those answers narrow the range down to a single number.

Before anyone heads out, you hear the price on the phone. Then payment is on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover comes with plenty of insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.

## Pocket: still next to the car?

Not touching the car is, then, the most useful thing open to you.

Keys out, motor off, ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, plus whether the engine ran is everything our technicians need. Petrol in Diesel handles the remainder across Greater Manchester, Pocket included.
