# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Poolbrook: Why It Occurs

Leave the motor and ignition off then call 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Caught before your motor runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Poolbrook.

The rest of this page explains why it happens and how to ensure it doesn't — handy if you're reading ahead of time.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Many newer diesels around Sherrards Green, as well as Poolbrook, carry on two fluids; your engine gets just your diesel.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, your diesel side gets filled all the time.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur around Poolbrook?

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the vehicle, and running dry leads to limp mode — so a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Poolbrook Road, perhaps outside The Three Horseshoes on the way home after work.

Then the car is strange. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, after begun, keeps on.

It's a few seconds, whether in Malvern Common or right in the heart of Poolbrook.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Whether a Poolbrook forecourt or a driveway over in Hall Green, take a couple of seconds on these before anything goes in.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Trust the cap, not its position.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of motors, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside your fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Check for it.

- Cannot see it beside your diesel filler? In that case check beneath the bonnet or inside the boot — the owner's manual will say which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Great Malvern.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Worcestershire that is.

- Switch off after you park — level ground, engine stopped, and not rushed beside Geraldine Road at the roadside.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap works — once you have located your filler and read it.

- Both under a single flap? Then make sure the cap on your diesel filler stays shut before raising the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Only then, start the vehicle: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Do not go on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Poolbrook already?

Do not start your motor: that's how the short order of things begins.

Keep the ignition off too, because on plenty of diesels it alone runs your fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

On a forecourt — Gulf, Countrywide Farmers or any other — the staff will normally help push the car away, if you ask.

If you are on your own driveway in Poolbrook, leave the car where it is.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Leave the M5 — under 5 miles out of Poolbrook — at the first exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Worcester, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Poolbrook.

## Poolbrook: what happens when we get there

Anywhere the car has stopped, whether outside Great Malvern Primary School, near Octagon or on your own drive, our van travels to it.

What liquid was put in, the amount, and whether it ran: our engineers ask because the replies set the work and price.

The price comes on the call, before any van leaves.

Emptying that tank comes next, then a full flush of the system.

Much more than with petrol, it counts here: the crystals build up, certain metals corrode, and nothing clears away on its own, no matter how long it is left.

Once the fuel filter is cleaned — or replaced, if required — clean diesel is added, and then the vehicle gets tested.

The engine is fired up next and tested to make sure it runs smoothly, all before our engineers head off.

Unrun vehicles usually mean a half-hour visit after arrival. The kit is fine on a live forecourt, and hushed enough for a driveway late at night.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork an insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

While we travel, have a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.
