# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Poole: Why It Happens

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off then call 0333 366 0103.

Around Poole, finding it before the engine runs usually leaves draining and a thorough flush where it stands.

The rest of this page explains why it happens and how to make sure it does not — useful if you are reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Plenty of modern diesels on the roads about Poole and Lower Hamworthy carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Each tank has its own filler.

Plenty of cars share a single flap for the two, whereas others move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

At the petrol pump, your diesel side is topped up all the time.

Much less commonly, the AdBlue side is filled — normally from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs around Poole

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off The George before work, or in the car park outside George Hotel on the way home.

The old car's filler is where the hand reaches — but a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That's a second factor: a strange car.

A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, once begun, carries on.

It takes a few seconds, be it out in Longfleet or bang in the heart of Poole.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

A few seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Oakdale or a forecourt around Poole.

- Check the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually are not.

- On many cars, the size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside the fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on many motors. Look for it.

- Can't see it beside your diesel inlet? Then check below the bonnet or inside your boot — the owner's manual says where.

- Whoever had it before will know. Check when you pick up a rental or company car — from the nearest station's car park, say — not once the warning appears.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Wherever in Dorset the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Switch off after you park — flat ground, engine stopped, and not in a rush by High Street on the verge.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, yet it does the trick.

- Both under a single flap? So confirm the cap on the diesel side stays closed before lifting the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Stage five stays off limits.

## Poole: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Don't start your motor: that is how the short order of things starts.

Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

On a forecourt — BP, Esso or any other — the attendants will usually help roll your car clear, when you ask.

If you are on your own drive in Poole, leave the car where it is.

When your engine has run by now, stop somewhere safe then switch the car off.

On the M27, under 25 miles from Poole, that means the next junction.

A short hop across Poole is a smaller job than a run towards Salisbury, under 50 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## What happens when our technicians arrive in Poole

Outside Old Town Infant School and Nursery, close to Poole Central Library or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Those replies settle the work and the quote, so our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it's run.

You hear that price by phone, before anybody heads out.

Next: draining, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and none of it clears out unaided. That is why it counts more.

Filter cleaned or, where needed, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a check of the vehicle.

We don't go until it has been fired up and is running properly.

If your motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Your insurer usually wants an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once this job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Before we get there, take a look at your insurance documents; many carry cover for misfuelling.

## AdBlue drains across Dorset, Poole included

Throughout BH postcodes, the teams that cover Poole — a coastal town — work the nearby spots too, Sterte and Old Town included.

Quote a postcode beginning BH15 1, and the van arrives quickest.

Moving the vehicle is not necessary.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Sterte Green, a side street near The Dolphin Poole: our engineers drain the car where it sits.

If you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of The Lighthouse, ring and ask instead of guessing.

## Poole drivers: the short version

Read the cap before you pour.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless, leave the car off then call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere across Dorset.
