# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Porlock? Keep It Switched Off

Motor off, ignition off: that's where you start if AdBlue has got into your diesel tank.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and nothing happens until your motor pulls it through.

Caught before your motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Porlock.

Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Porlock

Things to do:

- Remove your keys, which stops anyone switching the electrics on.

- If you're at all near moving traffic, put your hazards on.

- So you can give us which fluid it was and roughly what quantity, save the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Tell us a postcode starting TA24 8, or whichever street is closest, and the van reaches you directly — so ring wherever you are.

Do not do these:

- Shifting the vehicle just a few yards is no reason to fire up the engine.

- Many diesels run their pump the instant your ignition comes on, and so keep the car off.

- Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short distance down Parson's Street.

- Beside the road, don't try draining it on your own.

Get the people behind the counter to help you move the vehicle off the pumps if you're at a forecourt around Porlock, whether it is the the nearest petrol station or elsewhere.

On that drive, your car stays just where it was left.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

Kept in a dedicated tank, it's injected into the exhaust to clean the gases.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It does not mix in.

The intake takes fuel from the deepest part of your tank, and that's just where AdBlue ends up: as it is heavier than diesel, it sinks.

When your system runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Until then it sits beneath your diesel, and that is why a car filled in West Porlock last night and never started remains the simple case, as long as nobody touches your key.

It causes two kinds of damage from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it leaves urea that hardens in filter elements and narrow channels; and, because it attacks some metals, each part it touches keeps suffering for as long as it remains in there.

If the AdBlue has reached the lines, leaving it overnight in Porlock makes it worse. In the tank alone, waiting does nothing.

Water protects nothing. The injection pump and every injector need diesel flowing through them, and so the water part damages them in its own right.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more major than petrol

A problem of thin fuel is what you get after filling a diesel with petrol from the another forecourt nearby.

Damage just comes from driving on it. Mixed into the diesel and left inside that tank, it does none.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

It does not burn, so it cannot simply be run through.

Deposits and corrosion stay after the next tankful, and AdBlue separates again from the diesel, so thinning it won't help. Hence the flush counts so much, and turning your key "to see" costs more here than nearly any other slip — in Horner or the heart of Porlock alike.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Emptying a tank is the easiest job on a fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue remains in there — wherever across Somerset your car has stopped.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Porlock?

It is not deliberate. Many cars keep the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel inlet, occasionally under a single flap, and muddling them up is simple in poor light.

It usually happens outside the house, from a bottle bought en route home, rather than at the forecourt.

Mostly, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside St Dubricius Church of England VA School the refill is rushed.

A driver tips the container in at home, just off Lowerbourne Terrace, as the day ends.

Or your car is topped up in the car park at The Castle, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

It crops up most in a rental, a brand-new motor, a company car, or the other vehicle in a family with one of each fuel types — the vehicles people know least.

Wherever you're in Porlock or the rest of Somerset, it is the same error and the same first answer: leave the car off.

## Porlock: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside that tank.

It has been drawn through your filter and the fuel lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure pump and the injectors.

Rough running, smoke, lost power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: each might appear, perhaps part way across Porlock or returning from Porlock Recreation Ground.

Pull over when it is safe. Turn off. Keep the vehicle off rather than testing it again.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

Exit the M4, under 25 miles from Porlock, by the first junction and stop somewhere safe, rather than carrying on.

Each mile pushes the AdBlue further into the system. That is why crossing Porlock to park near Churchgate Gallery & Framing and a drive of under 50 miles for Cardiff are very distinct jobs.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

There's more to flush once the engine has been started, and we do all of it where the car has come to a stop.

Permanent damage is very uncommon when it's caught soon.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Porlock?

The vehicle remains where it is, whether that's a road beside St Dubricius Church, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station around Porlock, and our van travels to it.

The job depends on three answers, which we get first — which fluid got in, the amount, and whether your motor has run.

Then the tank is drained where the car sits, and so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush matters: the whole system is flushed right through since residue won't wash away by itself.

Next, the filter: flushed, or changed when it must be. After that clean diesel, then a check of the vehicle.

Roughly half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs when the motor hasn't run.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Bleeding the fuel system with fresh diesel comes at the end.

Starting it comes next, and then you set off from where your car is parked, by the nearest station or on a driveway in Porlock.

The test before our engineers head off is that it runs correctly on new diesel.

Since the job is done in full where your car is, a garage never comes into it.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers ask for.

Phone and ask instead of guessing when you are by a border, or anywhere tricky to pin down.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Porlock

There is no honest single quote, because the jobs aren't the same.

The cost changes first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that went in. After that it depends on where the car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Porlock Art Den.

Before a quote, not after, every enquiry from Porlock opens with the same three checks: the liquid, the quantity, plus whether it ran.

Given those replies, the range narrows to one firm figure.

Our price is given on the call, before a van leaves; settling up comes on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront.

As our engineer is on the way, check your insurance: plenty include misfuelling.

## Next to the car around Porlock, right now?

Then, the best thing to do with the vehicle is to not touch it.

Motor off, keys out, ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, plus whether the engine ran is all our engineers ask. Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder throughout Somerset, Porlock included.
