# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Port na Craig: Why It Occurs

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off and call 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if the motor has not run, it is emptied and thoroughly flushed where your car sits in Port na Craig.

Reading in advance? Then what follows covers why it happens and how to stop it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Many newer diesels on the roads around Port na Craig and Kinnaird carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust gas and cleans it.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on many cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Filling your diesel side at the petrol pump happens all the time.

Far less regularly, the AdBlue side is topped up — normally from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Port na Craig: how it occurs

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

Haste comes from the warning. The car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a driveway off Ferry Crescent, or on the way home in the car park at The Coach House.

Then, the hand goes for the cap it knew on the old motor — since a rental car, a new motor or a company car places the fillers where your last one did not.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

Whether it takes place in Pitlochry or the middle of Port na Craig, it's the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Check these first, at a forecourt around Port na Craig or a driveway over in Faskally. Seconds, no more.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Go by the cap, not its position.

- On many motors, the size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Lift the flap and check for a label — many vehicles mark which goes in which inlet just there.

- Can't see it next to your diesel inlet? In that case check beneath the bonnet or in your boot — the owner's manual will say which.

- The previous driver will know. Check when you collect a rental or company car — from Pitlochry's car park, perhaps — not once the warning appears.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

When the light comes on, wherever in Perth and Kinross, use this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Tummel Crescent, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park and switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Find at the second or third stage that the bottle went in the wrong tank? That's where you stop.

Step five is off limits.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Port na Craig already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your motor.

Don't switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

On a forecourt — BP, Gulf or another — the attendants will normally help push your car away, when you ask.

If you are on your own driveway in Port na Craig, leave the car where it stands.

Already run? Pull over once it's sensible, then switch off.

On the M90, under 25 miles from Port na Craig, that means the next exit.

A short hop across Port na Craig is a smaller job than a run towards Perth, under 25 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What takes place when we arrive in Port na Craig

Anywhere your car came to rest, whether outside the local primary school, beside Port Na Craig Suspension Bridge or at home, the van travels to it.

Which liquid was put in, the quantity, and whether it ran: we ask because those replies set both work and price.

On the phone call itself, you are told the quote — ahead of dispatch.

Emptying your tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

A test is at the end: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the filter is flushed or replaced if necessary.

Next we fire it up and make sure it runs smoothly before leaving.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after our engineers get there, as long as your motor hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a live forecourt yet quiet at night beside a house.

No money upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in many insurance policies — so use the wait to look at yours.
